I was down in San Clemente this morning with some of the tandem surfers who will be showing off their stuff this weekend at this year’s Ocean fest.
It’s pretty amazing watching them pull off all these tricks, flipping around and standing on one another while riding a wave in. And adding to the excitement will be some big waves expected to come through on Sunday, making some of the moves they’re going to try pretty difficult.
The world champion of tandem surfing Kalani Vierra will be there to compete with his 11-year-old daughter Ala. On the other side of the spectrum are a couple of teenagers who have only been doing it for about four months.
Tandem surfing used to be a big deal back in the ’60s and earlier, but died off for a while. But it’s definitely back on the upswing, as tandem surfers are trying to revive their sport by bringing in younger competitors.
At the practice, spectators from the pier and sand broke out in applause as they did their moves. You won’t want to miss this show.
