Surfboards in the Sand

If you surf and you want to help out the environment and be a part of history then listen to this. Rip Curl is putting on an event called Surfboards in the Sand. It’s a historic photo opportunity to celebrate surf culture and to help raise funds for the Surfrider Foundation and the Orange County Coastkeeper.

Surf legend Peter “PT” Townend is expected to be joined by thousands of surfers with their boards. The Surfboards in the Sand photograph will be shot by, and published in Transworld Surf Magazine and other international publications.

Anybody can be a part of this historic photo shoot. Advanced online registration is only $10 per person or $20 on the day of the event.

There will also be live entertainment, free gifts, a free one year subscription to Transworld Surf Magazine and a free event t-shirt if you sign up online before September 10, 2009.

Surfboards in the Sand to make history

If you’re a surfer, then you have to be a part of history and join the Rip Curl Surfboards in the Sand event in Huntington Beach.

At 10 a.m. on Sept. 19, organizers are hoping to get thousands of surfers on the sand for a photo op to show their love for surfing and the environment. The purpose of the event – to be held on Sept. 19 – is to raise awareness for the coastal environment, and proceeds will benefit Surfrider Foundation.

The historic Surfboards in the Sand photo will be shot by and published in Transworld SURF Magazine, and other select international publications (and no doubt, the Orange County Register, of course).

The event marks the 50-year anniversary of surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The effort is being pulled together by surfing’s first world champ Peter “PT” Townend, as well as famous female surfer Linda Benson.

To get involved, register online at www.surfboardsinthesand.com by Sept. 10. It costs $10 to be a part of the event, ($20 after Sept. 10) – but remember it’s for a good cause.

The proceeds go to the Surfrider Foundation and Orange County Coastkeeper; a free limited edition “Surfboards In The Sand” T-shirt by Rip Curl (valued at $25 and delivered onsite on event day), a one-year subscription to Transworld SURF, and a bracelet that gives participants discounts at shops and restaurants in the downtown area.

Bikini contest for a cause

Surfrider Foundation held a fundraiser party at Chronic Cantina last Sunday, featuring everything from a dunk tank, a mechanical surf board, a bikini contest to a hula hoop contest.

“Overall it was successful, and people are looking forward to next year’s Surfrider event! In this hard economy, people still paid the $15 to support a good cause, while having a good time,” according to event planner Raquel Figlo.

Celebrity surf session to benefit Surfrider

If you want to check out some celebrities catching some waves for a cause, head down to Malibu on Sept. 12 for the Surfrider Foundation’s 4th annual Celebrity Expression Session.

The event will be held at First Point, Surfrider Beach in Malibu as part of the Malibu Surfing Association’s MSA Classic invitational contest.

The Celebrity Expression Session allows celebrities to show off their surfing skills and moves in a free surf format, while raising funds and awareness for the Surfrider Foundation. Past participants including Jason Mraz, Sal Masekela, David Chokachi, Minnie Driver, Flea and Brandon Boyd have raised more than $5,000 for the foundation and its continued efforts to protect our coastlines.

“This isn’t some wingy ‘push the celebrity into a wave’ type of event,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “These guys are going to be out there working First Point to raise money to help keep our oceans, waves and beaches clean.”

The MSA Classic – the premier contest in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs annual series – will host the Surfrider Foundation’s Celebrity Expression Session for the second year in a row. The MSA Classic, first held in 1962, now has over 275 athletes representing elite surfing clubs from around the world.

Admission to the Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Expression Session and MSA Classic are free.

The Surfrider Foundation has joined forces with CardPartner, Inc. to launch the Surfrider Foundation Visa Platinum Rewards credit card with no annual fee.

Barefoot Wine and Surfrider Foundation beach cleanup

If you’re not going out of town for the 4th of July holiday weekend, then here’s a cool event where you can hang out at the beach, s0ak up some rays, and help out the environment.

In celebration of Surfrider Foundation’s 25th anniversary, Barefoot Wine, Surfrider Foundation, and community volunteers are teaming up for a nationwide tour to cleanup 25 beaches and lakes.

The event if free and open to the pubic.

When: Saturday, July 5. Beach cleanup from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.

Where: Doheny State Beach, Dana Point.

Celebration to follow featuring Barefoot wines for volunteers 21 and over at Hennessey’s Tavern, Dana Point.

Seal Beach clean-up on Friday

If you’re getting a jump start to your weekend and you feel like making a difference at one Orange County beach then check this out.

Vans and the Surfrider Foundation are celebrating National Oceans month by teaming up to help clean-up Seal Beach.

They need all the help they can get. Vans will be supplying the volunteers with trash bags, gloves, hats and t-shirts.

All you have to do is show up on the sand at 1st street and Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach. There will also be giveaways for the volunteers, plus coffee and bagels!

When: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. June 19.

Where: 1st Street and Ocean Ave., Seal Beach

International Surfing Day

International Surfing Day is coming up next Saturday - like you needed an excuse, right?

If you’ve never heard of the day, it started about five years ago - with the goal of surfers getting together to help clean up their beloved environment, then heading out to appreciate some surf.

The first two years started pretty slow, but the day has gained a lot of traction, and I expect this year to be the biggest.

One of the events that looks really fun is held down at Bolsa Chica State Beach by Quiksilver and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Conservancy, where they’ll have free lunch from Taco Bell, Surftech demo boards and smoothies for participants. The event is open to the public, meet Parking is free if you show up between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The clean up starts at 7 a.m., and the surf session at 9 a.m., meet at the furthest south parking lot.

Clean the beach - then drink some wine

If you want to do something to make you feel good - then drink something to make you feel even better - come out to Huntington Beach on June 13 for the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project.

The group is helping Surfrider Foundation celebrate 25 years, and volunteers are setting out to clean up 25 spots nationwide, including right here in Orange County.

After the clean up, volunteers over 21 years old can come out for a party at the new Shorebreak Hotel, where there will be food, live music, and of course, wine.

When and Where:

Beach clean up happens from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bolsa Chica State Beach, tower 21. The Barefoot Celebration will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Shorebreak Hotel, north of the Huntington Beach pier. The events are free to the public.

Havassy art show on Saturday

If you love surfing and you appreciate great art, then you’ll definitely want to check out this event. Newport Beach surfer and artist Robb Havassy will be unveiling some of his latest paintings from his Marin Dogwood Series.

There will be live music from IODINE 69, Groove Ensemble and the eVocal Collective as well as a few DJ sets. The show is free and open to the public.

Robb Havassy has collaborated with several brands in the surf-skate community including work with Reef, OP, Hurley, Globe, Sector 9, Robert August and the Surfrider Foundation.
