Ask the Expert: How do I get mom to stop surfing with me???

July 31st, 2008, 4:03 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Three-time international surf champ Corky Carroll answers your questions each week on the Beach Blog. You can hit him up at corkysurf@aol.com Here’s this week’s line up:

Q.  My mother has been taking surfing lessons and now wants to go with me and my friends to the beach.  How can  I make her stop?

A.  Well, do you want her to not surf or simply not surf with you?  If she is really stoked on surfing then leave her alone and let her have fun.  If you are worried that she is horning in on your time with you friends then just tell her that.  Then duck and run.   Good luck.

Q.  What do you think about the new stand-up paddleboards?

A.  I have to admit that I am a bit of a jerk when it comes to accepting “other” forms of surfing equipment.  I think the stand up paddleboards are great if they would stick to just paddling.  But noooooooooooooo.  They have to ride waves with them.  This is fine and dandy as long as they are at a beach where there is not normal surfing going on.

Things that use oars don’t seem to mix well with the surfing crowds the way they already are.  That goes for kayaks, surf skis and anything else including wave runners and jet skis.   That said, I should point out that everybody has the same right to the water as everybody else.  And, that said, I admit to being one of those jerks that think that the surf spots should be for surfing and all those other floatation devices should be kept to places better for them and not mainstream surfing locations.  I know this is a shallow and selfish attitude but its mine and I am stickin’ to it.
