Surfboards in the Sand to make history

If you’re a surfer, then you have to be a part of history and join the Rip Curl Surfboards in the Sand event in Huntington Beach.

epicAt 10 a.m. on Sept. 19, organizers are hoping to get thousands of surfers on the sand for a photo op to show their love for surfing and the environment. The purpose of the event – to be held on Sept. 19 – is to raise awareness for the coastal environment, and proceeds will benefit Surfrider Foundation.

The historic Surfboards in the Sand photo will be shot by and published in Transworld SURF Magazine, and other select international publications (and no doubt, the Orange County Register, of course).

The event marks the 50-year anniversary of surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The effort is being pulled together by surfing’s first world champ Peter “PT” Townend, as well as famous female surfer Linda Benson.

To get involved, register online at www.surfboardsinthesand.com by Sept. 10. It costs $10 to be a part of the event, ($20 after Sept. 10) – but remember it’s for a good cause.

The proceeds go to the Surfrider Foundation and Orange County Coastkeeper; a free limited edition “Surfboards In The Sand” T-shirt by Rip Curl (valued at $25 and delivered onsite on event day), a one-year subscription to Transworld SURF, and a bracelet that gives participants discounts at shops and restaurants in the downtown area.

Battle of the Brands surf contest in HB

n115032241698_9704Come out to check some surfing athletes from top surf brands battle it out for bragging rights in Huntington Beach on Aug. 29.

Athletes from Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl and O’Neill (and the zany editors from Surfer Mag, Surfing Mag, TransWorld Surf, Surfline and Fuel TV) will be going head-to-head during the 3rd annual PacSun Battle of the Brands.

When: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 29

Where: South side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Rip Curl GromSearch set for HB

rip-curl-gromsearchThe best 16 and under guy and girl amateur surfers from the West Coast are about to take over a portion of the lineup in Surf City this weekend on the first of four stops of the 2009 Rip Curl GromSearch Series.

The young teen rippers are not only competing for cash and swag, but for a chance to qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final this November.

Winners of that will be scoring an all-expenses paid trip to Australia, for the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final.  That prestigious event takes place during the ASP World Championship Tour Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.

Meanwhile, Surfline forecasters are calling for a pretty good weekend of waves for the contest.  They say we should see a modest holding southwest swell which should provide waist to shoulder high waves with some occasional bigger sets at those more exposed breaks.

When: 7:30 a.m Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14

Where: 9th Street, Huntington Beach.

Rip Curl GromSearch contest in HB

rip-curl-grom-search If you’re a young competitive surfer then this is a contest you won’t want to miss!!  The first stop of the 2009 Rip Curl GromSearch is less than a month away.

You can be sure the best 16 and under amateur girl and guy surfers from across the nation will be battling it out.

The series is made up of four regional championship events.  The finalists of each contest  advance to the National Final at Salt Creek to compete for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Champion title.

The winner of the premier 16 and under division at the National Final wins an all-expense paid trip to Bells Beach in Australia for the Rip Curl GromSearch International Finals next April.

Since the first Rip Curl GromSearch kicked off in Australia back in 1999, this competitive circuit has been a breeding ground for some amazing athletes including ASP World Championship Tour surfer Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Mason Ho, Sally Fitzgibbons and Alana Blanchard.

Entry to the contest is $35.

Rip Curl wetsuits demo day

If you’re in the market for a new wetsuit then you might want to take a little road trip.  Rip Curl and Surfride surf shop are teaming up for a chance to test out Rip Curl’s new E3 wetsuit and surf with some of the company’s top team riders.

Rip Curl’s A-listers Taylor Knox, Pancho Sullivan, Kekoa Bacalso and others will be paddling out to catch a morning surf session.  It all happens on Friday, May 1, from 7-10 a.m. at South Ponto in Carlsbad.

Rip Curl will also be tossing out a ton of FREE swag to those who show up!  So you just might want to call in sick or show up to the office a little late tomorrow.
