Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido

July 31st, 2009, 1:32 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

puertoIf  you’ve ever heard of the surf spot in Mexico called Puerto Escondido, then typically you think of huge deadly barrels.

Well in just less than two weeks from now some of the world’s best big wave chargers will be gathering at the “Mexican Pipeline” for the first ever ASP World Qualifying Series contest to be held during Puerto Escondido’s peak swell period.

The Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido will have an eight day holding  period as opposed to the typical three day window.

The surf at this famous spot during this time of the year is usually pretty big and could potentially reach over 20 feet which would make for some incredible action.

Some of the top talent taking part in the event include Northern California big-wave charger Peter Mel, Oahu’s Mark Healey, Quiksilver Young Guns Clay Marzo and Tyler Newton and Latin American Quiksilver riders Cristobol de Col, Gabriel Villaran and Martinez and Ramon Navarro.

The three-star WQS official waiting period begins on Wednesday, August 12 and runs through Wednesday, August 19.  If you want to watch some insane surfing, then definitely log onto the live webcast.
