July 26th, 2009, 9:12 am by Bryan Roy, ocregister.com

picture-31San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas ended his hot streak Sunday morning in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Gudauskas lost to C.J. Hobgood by about three points overall, 16.76 to 13.77.

“It wasn’t my best heat,” Gudauskas said. “He came out swinging. there’s not much you can do. I kind of got stuck by the pier and just started burning all my energy.”

Still as one of two Orange County surfers to make the quarterfinals, Gudauskas had nothing but love for his hometown crowd.

Gudauskas plans to relax for a few weeks while trailing for his next stop: France on August 15.

“It’s been insane,” he said. “Definitely the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen. It’s pretty exciting.”

San Clemente’s Gudauskas reaches quarterfinals with ease

July 25th, 2009, 9:39 am by Bryan Roy, ocregister.com

Patrick Gudauskas took a commanding early lead and never looked back — he advanced to the quarterfinals Saturday morning.

The San Clemente surfer posted a 15.23 combined score against Eric Geiselman, who finished with a 7.96 combined.

Despite a strong lead down the stretch, Gudauskas admitted that he couldn’t hear much in the water.

“I was expecting him to make a surge at the end, but I was fortunate that he didn’t. Just another heat in the bag,” said Gudauskas, who knocked off surfing great Andy Irons to reach today’s quarterfinals. “The conditions changed a bit today — it’s really clean.

“Just to make it to the quarterfinals is huge and throw your name into the hat for $100,000,” he added.

San Clemente’s Gudauskas knocks out surfing great

July 24th, 2009, 10:10 am by Bryan Roy, ocregister.com

It went silent as the wave crashed. Spectators thought he crumbled, too.

But when the foam settled from the 10-foot swell and a standing figure became visible, Patrick Gudauskas reappeared to an applause impressive for an early morning crowd.

dsc_0050Earning him a score of 9.17, not only did the wave advance him to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, but the San Clemente native did so by knocking out three-time world title surfer Andy Irons.

“It was kind of a Hail Mary moment,” Gudauskas said of the wave he didn’t think he could land. “I thought, ‘maybe I can get just one big turn.’ I was just getting blasted out there.”

In one of the more exciting heats, C.J. Hobgood took first place with 16.23, followed by Gudauskas’ 14.84.

Irons finished third with a 12.67 after calling his heat a minute early with a broken fin on his board. The more popular big-name walked onto the beach passing spectators seeking autographs.

“I knew it was going to be a good heat. Pat (Gudauskas) is on a role and Andy (Irons) is a surfing great. I just tried to tell myself I’m a roll,” said Hobgood, who modified his board this morning, to bigger fins. “You knew it was going to be good and everyone’s going to drop a big score.”

“We were all just trying to look for a good backup,” Hobgood said. “Whoever got the good backup was going to win that heat. I was able to nail one at the end.”

San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas moves on without brother

July 23rd, 2009, 11:10 am by Bryan Roy, ocregister.com

Four heats into Thursday’s U.S. Open of Surfing, and Patrick is the last Gudauskas brother standing.

After Tanner Gudauskas failed to advance with a third-place finish in his heat this morning, Patrick barely survived what he called “dogfight” level of competition, finishing second in his heat with a score of 11.4.

The field of 48 will be narrowed down to 24 this afternoon.

“I’m super stoked. It’s kind of a dogfight round with a lot of guys who want to move on,” said Patrick, a San Clemente native. “I was a little nervous and shaky, at least at the beginning. So I’m glad I got that out of the way and hopefully just do better next round.”

US Open: Patrick Gudauskas wins heat to advance

July 21st, 2009, 3:25 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

dsc_0060San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas just won his heat down here at the U.S. Open of Surfing, joining his brother Tanner and moving forward in the competition.

Their brother Dane got knocked out of the competition.

Gudauskas had a total combined heat score of 12.67. Former WCT’er Cory Lopez lost out during the heat.

“It’s really tough out there,” Patrick said after getting out of the water. He said he only got about 3 - 4 decent waves.

“You definitely have to pick your gems out there. You just have to make your own luck when it’s tough.”

Later this week, the waves should be better for competitors.

“Thursday is going to be cracking,” he said. “So I’m hoping to make it through to that point.”

U.S. Open: Top OC surfers to watch

July 21st, 2009, 8:10 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Orange County has its fair share of surfers traveling the world to earn points to one day make it into the big leagues to join the World Tour, where they would compete for big bucks against top-notch surfers like Kelly Slater.

watch_slideshowHistorically, the U.S. Open of Surfing is a great venue for stand-out, up-and-coming surfers to not only gain a lot of points on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) because it is rated 6 stars (the only step higher is a 6-star prime), but it’s also a great place to perform in front of massive crowds and make a name.

This year could be different.

Hurley - which signed on this year as title sponsor - is mixing things up, bringing some of the best surfers in the world to compete in the contest. They added an all-star event with surfers like nine-time WCT champion Slater and former world champ Andy Irons, and those surfers will also be added to the mix of surfers competing to win the entire contest – and nab a record $100,000 first prize.

It’s the first time in years the U.S. Open of Surfing has had this caliber of talent competing, and factor in the biggest south swell to hit in years – this one could be for the record books.

When former world champ Ian Cairns heard about the line up of surfers to compete this year, his first thought of how unfair it might be to the WQS guys who are working hard for points to join the tour. Then, he thought: “You have to be able to beat those guys, so let’s step it up and give it a go, see what they can do.”

Doing well this weekend at the U.S. Open of Surfing can be critical for the WQS surfers – a big win here could help get them a spot on the World Tour.

“It’s going to be really exciting,” said Robert Shadley, media relations for ASP. “The level of surfing, it’s going to be a world-class event, without a doubt some of the best surfing in the world.”

According to ASP, here are the local surfers currently within the top 50 on the WQS expected at the U.S. Open of Surfing:

Tanner Gudauskas: Currently rated 6th on the WQS and is top American overall. Tanner’s best results this year were a win at the 6-Star Mr. Price Pro Ballito in South Africa and a third place finish at the 6-Star PRIME (prime status is allocated only to world-class waves and offer more points than a regular 6-Star) 6.0 Lowers Pro. Tanner was the winner of last year’s U.S. Open Pro Junior.

Patrick Gudauskas pulls off aerial flip again!

June 14th, 2009, 8:30 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

OC Register reporter Fred Swegles just wrote about another amazing display by San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas, who pulled off another aerial flip to nearly win the ASP event going down in the Maldives. Here’s a bit about what he wrote:

One history-making move was not enough for pro surfer Patrick Gudauskas this week at the $145,000 Sri Lankan Airlines Pro in the Maldives Islands.

Today the 23-year-old from San Clemente pulled a second aerial flip during the final and – incredibly – it wasn’t enough.

He placed second to Australia’s Owen Wright in what observers described as one of the most exciting Association of Surfing Professionals finals ever.

Wright scored 19.23 out of a possible 20 on his two scoring rides in the final, Gudauskas 18.93.

The result boosted Wright into the No. 1 position in the ASP’s World Qualifying Series, a worldwide circuit in which hundreds of hopefuls seek ratings points to qualify for next year’s ASP World Championship Tour.

Gudauskas, who was No. 27, leapfrogged 20 spots to No. 7. Brett Simpson of Huntington Beach, who finished 37th of 128 surfers in the event, remains Orange County’s top-ranked WQS hopeful, at No. 5.
