How much would you pay to be butt naked at the beach?

July 13th, 2009, 11:37 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Here's a map to trail 6

If you want to hang out - hang it all out - on the sand down at San Onofre, you’ll have to be willing to pay for it.

The Orange County Register’s Cindy Carcamo reports that the state will start fining people after Labor Day who bare their butts down at Trail 6, a long-time nude beach where supporters recently lost a battle with the state.

So if you’ve ever wanted to have a get-naked-on-the-beach party,  you better do it before Labor Day.

Here’s more from Carcamo’s story about the ban.

No more hangin’ butt naked on the beach

The Orange County Register reports that people will have to put their clothes back on at one of the last nude beaches left in California, a long-time nude friendly beach at Trail 6 down at San Onofre State Beach.

Here’s more from reporter Cindy Carcamo:

“A group of nudists who want to keep San Onofre State Beach’s Trail 6 a clothing-optional beach have lost their latest legal battle, after a panel of justices at the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled that a policy that addresses nudity at state beaches is invalid.

The ruling favored state officials who last spring decided to crack down on a more than 20-year tradition of nude sunbathing at the 1,000-foot stretch of beach.

Huntington Beach attorney Allen Baylis, who led the fight against the ban, said the Naturist Action Committee will likely appeal their case to the state’s Supreme Court.

“It’s time for the (Department of Parks and Recreation) to realize that one of the reasons San Onofre has so many visitors is that there’s a very popular clothing-optional beach there,” Baylis said. “The people who visit Trail 6 pay their admission fees and buy their annual passes, which contribute a significant amount of money to the department and the local economy.”

There’s a lot of differing opinions when it comes to whether this area should be allowed to have nudist hangin’ out with their wangs out. Some say people in the U.S. are far too uptight, and there’s plenty of places in Europe and elsewhere that have a more laxed approach. Others say it’s a public place, and parents should feel comfortable bringing their kids to the beach.

So Cal surfing vs. Central Coast? Plus nude surfing

July 21st, 2008, 1:00 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Just came across this random blog called “Sidetracked” out of San Luis Obispo, where reporter Pat Pemberton came down to So Cal recently for a taste of what our waves are like to compare them to Central Coast.

Just a few of the observations: Our weather is warmer, girls surf in bikinis, and 9-year-olds are often better than old folks. Read more about what he had to say here.

Which part of the coast do you prefer for surfing?

While checking out his blog, I also came across a post from a while back about surfing naked. He could have tried it down at trail 6 at San Onofre while on his So Cal trip  – for a while at least, before the state this Labor Day shuts the nude beach down

But even if he knew about it, not sure if he’d be up for it.  Reasons: surf wax and shrinkage. Check out more from that blog here.

Nude beach at San Onofre: What readers said

June 2nd, 2008, 10:39 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

30_nudebeach2_large.jpgI was pretty amazed last week at the reader response to the story we wrote last week about the state shutting down Trail 6 down at San Onofre - a small, secluded stretch of beach where naturists are allowed to hang out naked.

The state said it will start its  education effort today by telling beachgoers along the 1,000 foot stretch of sand that they will soon not be allowed to shed their clothes. But the area will remain open through the summer, with citations not coming until Labor Day.

I wanted to share some of what readers said about the issue. All together, we had 1,599 people vote on the poll (a pretty large amount in my experience with the blog), and about 175 people submit comments on the original story and the blog combined.  Click here if you want to join the conversation, or vote on the poll.

30_nudebeach10_large.jpgAnd to the many inquiries on whether or not I did the interviews at this beach naked - I did not! Get your minds out of the gutter! Although it definitely was a first for me, having to jot down notes while the person I was interviewing had their junk just chillin. The things I’ll do for this job…

When it came to the poll (which remember, is very unscientific), the majority at 1,210 said they were going to head down to the beach to take their clothes off, while only 210 said the state should shut it down.

Here’s what some of the comments read:

State run beaches are for everyone to enjoy. Unless nudity is allowed at all beaches they should comply by covering up or find another less exclusive location. My hope is that once enforcement of this issue starts with citations, the popularity of this area will decline and the parking lot will have plenty of spaces avaliable for those of us who enjoy the place for what it is, a surfer’s paradise.
Too all you kooks who sit and sunburn: go home!

First it’s the stoners, now it’s the nudies. It gets more and more disturbing every day how far the government thinks it can regulate our lives. They’re not hurting anybody or forcing anyone to do as they do, so leave the freakin hippies alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

State cracks down on San Onofre nude beach. Poll: What do you think of the nude beach?

May 30th, 2008, 8:47 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

For all you who thought the nude beach down at San Onofre was just an urban legend - I A man who identified himself only as Gary enjoys the warm weather in the nude at San Onofre State Beach. Gary has been enjoying nude sunbathing at the beach for years and is not happy about the Californa Department of Parks and Recreation decision to revoke the clothing optional designation of the area known as San Onofre Trail 6 area located at San Onofre State Beach. Photo by Leonard Ortizpersonally talked to enough naked people yesterday to know there is indeed a small stretch of beach long regarded as “clothing-optional.”

My fellow reporter Cindy Carcamo and I have been working on a story this week about the state wanting these folks to put their clothes back on. The 1,000 foot stretch of beach - hidden from the world from high rocky cliffs - has been a naturist area for decades. Read more about the area, and what the state plans to do.

So of  course, I had to ask:

What do you think of the nude beach?
