Newport Harbor High benefit surf contest

March 17th, 2009, 5:12 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

If you’re a amateur surfer who enjoys competing and would like to help out a local high school surf team then listen to this.  Newport Harbor High School and Surfside Sports are hosting the 10th Annual Newport Surf Classic at 56th street in Newport Beach.

It all happens on Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29.  There are several divisions including everything from Groms (8 and under) to Masters (40 and over).  Entry fees are $30 until Thursday March 26, and $35 for a beach entry the day of the event.

Every competitor gets a contest t-shirt, lunch and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a ton of surf gear.  All of the proceeds help support the Newport Harbor High School Surf Team.  If you want a chance to surf famed 56th street with only a few people in the lineup, then you won’t want to miss this event.  For more info, go to nhhssurf.com.

Sea lions sink boat in Newport Harbor

August 29th, 2008, 2:55 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The bad news is - the found another one. And sunk it.

I went down to the harbor today after getting word from bayfront resident Larry Buckelew that two sea lions had gotten on top of a small boat, and it took in so much water with the weight of the burly beasts that it ended up at the bottom of the harbor.

That sucks. (read the full story here)

There was a ton of debate on whether the sea lions should be left alone, seeing as they were there first. Others agreed with Buckelew and other irked bayfront residents who said the city has to do something better to take control of this issue.
