Newport Beach local makes PacSun USA Surf Team

September 7th, 2009, 8:10 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

andrew-dohenyOne of North America’s best 16 and under surfers has made another big accomplishment.  Newport Beach’s Andrew Doheny is the most recent addition to the PacSun USA Surf Team.

Doheny has been a top competitor for several years in the NSSA and is currently rated number four on the ASP North America Pro Junior Tour.

He was chosen by PacSun USA Surf Team Head Coach Ian Cairns to be one of five surfers to represent the U.S. in the boys 18 and under division.

When Doheny’s not competing or on a photo trip to some remote surf spot, he can be found ripping up his backyard, 54th street in Newport Beach.

Andrew Doheny’s sponsors include Volcom clothing and wetsuits, Vans shoes, Electric Visual, JS Surfboards, Creatures of Leisure surfing accessories, Sex Wax , Vestal Watches and HSS surf shop.

Ditch the wetsuit, water warms up

September 2nd, 2009, 12:06 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

I went out for a quick morning surf at Blackies this morning, and couldn’t believe how toasty the water was today.

Just did a quick check with lifeguards in Newport Beach, who said water temps are clocking at 72.5 degrees.

Down in Laguna Beach, temps are at 71 degrees, and in Seal Beach they are ranging from 68 -70.

If you’re headed out for a surf, definitely leave the wetsuit at home. And if you’re gearing up to go back to school, head out to enjoy the warm bath water! The air temps are baking at the coast, find out more on Sciencedude’s blog.

Lifeguard warning drops to yellow as waves ease

August 28th, 2009, 1:53 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Lifeguards in Newport Beach and Laguna have dropped the red flag warning for beachgoers to yellow, but the conditions are still considered hazardous.

The waves on Thursday caught lifeguards off guard as Tropical Storm Ignacio came in stronger than they expected. They put up the red flag warnings, used to advise the public of dangerous conditions caused by large surf and strong rip currents.

On yellow flag days, lifeguards suggest swimmers use fins or have adequate ocean experience.

Swell drops a bit, but still fun waves to be had

August 28th, 2009, 1:32 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The swell dropped a bit on Friday, with a lot of people saying “you should have been here yesterday, it was amazing!”

Well, there were still plenty of waves coming through in Newport Beach this morning. I started out at the Point, then cruised down to the Wedge to see what was happening.

Here’s some snapshots:

Lifeguards put up red flag warnings as swell hits hard

August 27th, 2009, 6:02 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The hurricane swell that rolled in today caught many people off guard - including lifeguards who didn’t anticipate the surf to be as strong as it was as this blistering heat sent people to the shores for relief.

Laguna Beach Marine Safety Capt. Tom Trager said surf rose to 8 feet in Laguna Beach today, and lifeguards had to put up a red flag warning - which means inexperienced swimmers need to stay out of the water.

The beach warning will continue through tomorrow, with surf and rip currents expected to be just as strong.

“We had a lot of lifeguards working hard to prevent people from getting in trouble, and educating them on why today wasn’t their day,” Trager said.

Forecasters have been predicting for the swell to taper off today, but then it hit harder and stronger than expected. Hurricane swells send waves in at close intervals, slamming the shore one after the other and making it difficult for swimmers. Though there will be a slow decrease over the weekend, there will still be strong waves that beach-goers need to be aware of.

“The message we want to put out to people is: Unless you’re an experienced ocean swimmer with two fins, then we’d prefer you wait for another day to get into the ocean,” he said. “It’s a pretty significant swell we’re having.”

Scuba diving will also be restricted this weekend, and people will be prevented from going onto rock jetties. The yellow and red flag warnings will continue through the weekend in Laguna Beach.

Newport Beach lifeguard Capt. Jim Turner said lifeguards there put up red flags as well.

“I was hoping things were going to lay down a bit, bit it was consistent,” he said of today’s hurricane swell.

The Wedge was typically big, but no major injuries like the spinal cord injury reported Wednesday of a 22-year-old pro tennis player.

With the heat driving people to the coast, Turner said lifeguards will be on alert.

“We’re anticipating big crowds and a busy day,” he said of Friday.

Surf shots: Doho gets messy

August 27th, 2009, 4:10 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

I shot down to Doheny State Beach this morning to snap some photos of people who went out for a surf today as the swell continues.

Sometimes you get a good day, like over the weekend in Newport Beach. Today was a bit of a bummer, with messy, sloppy conditions. But still, it was fun to watch these surfers take on the waves, and battle through the strong currents and whitewash.

Also took some snaps of people hanging on the beach, the lucky ones who got to beat the heat by heading to the coast.

Check out these photos of the surf today, in case you were stuck behind your desk and you missed it:

Bodysurfer injured at the Wedge

August 26th, 2009, 5:25 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

A bodysurfer was rescued from the Wedge in Newport Beach today, after suffering a neck injury that sent him to the hospital.
The spinal cord injury comes about a month after a man was killed taking on big waves at the famous bodysurfing spot just north of the Newport Harbor entrance.
While the waves were not as large as that day,  a south swell sent waves up to 8 feet to the Wedge today.
“He was out riding waves, and ended up in trouble,” lifeguard Capt. Jim Turner said of today’s injury.

On duty lifeguards, citizens and two Huntington Beach city lifeguards rushed to pull the man, said to be in his 20s, out of the water. With the big waves, it was a struggle to get him from the water. The rescue happened about 2:30 p.m.
Paramedics transported the man to the hospital. It is unknown how severe his injuries are, but Turner said he was conscious when he was on the sand.
“Until we have X-rays and the swelling goes down, you can’t tell for sure,” Turner said. “I’ve had patients we’ve thought were going to be in trouble, but ended up fine.”
Turner said spinal cord injuries can happen at any time at the beach, and people need to remember to avoid diving into the water head first, and to have arms stretched out if they are bodysurfing.
“You’d much rather hurt a shoulder, than have a neck injury,” he said. “You have to protect yourself.”

UPDATE:

Wedge bodysurfer Kevin “Mel” Thoman said the surfer, identified as 22-year-old Robert Khoury, is a pro tennis player and regular at the Wedge.
“He took off and rode the wave very well, but something must have happened after it tubed over him,” he wrote in an e-mail. “As you know, if it’s hollow, we don’t pull out, we just keep going into the tube.”

Thoman said Khoury is being treated at Hoag Hospital, and will likely have surgery Thursday.
