A long paddle to “Save Mike’s Head”

May 27th, 2009, 10:19 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

paddle1Mike Fisher had two words after a long day of stand-up paddling: “I’m tired.”

Friends and family stood on the sand to greet Fisher, who along with four others took turns completing a 50-mile trek from Malibu to Duke’s near the Huntington Beach pier on Wednesday, as part of a fundraiser to “Save Mike’s Head” held at the restaurant.

Fisher, who paddled a total of about two hours during 20-minute intervals trading off with four other paddlers, was diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer in September.

The group woke up at the crack of dawn to drive up to Malibu, but after a bit of boat trouble didn’t start paddling until 9 a.m.

Winds; boat difficulties challenge stand up paddlers on 50-mile voyage

May 27th, 2009, 2:24 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

img_7104With the winds picking up, the paddlers are starting to struggle.
Five stand up paddleboarders are making their way down the coastline right now from Malibu to Duke’s at the Huntington Beach Pier - on a mission to complete the 50-mile trek to raise money for Mike Fisher, a Huntington Beach High School surfer who is battling stage 3 brain cancer.
“We’re doing our best out here,” Fisher said via cell phone at about 2:10 p.m. “It’s getting down to the nitty gritty, everyone is really tired, the chop is picking up.”
The group is switching off turns every 20 minutes on a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), while the others follow alongside on a boat.

paddleg0528They had just reached the Los Angeles breakwall area when he was reached on his phone.

Fisher – who woke up at 2:30 a.m. for the journey – said they didn’t start paddling until about 9 a.m. after their boat broke down just as they got started.

After making a few calls, Huntington Beach lifeguards came to the rescue with one of their boats, escorting them the rest of the way.
Despite the choppy, wind-whipped waters, everyone is having a good time, he said.

The stand up paddlers expect to be at the pier by about 4:30 p.m., with a fundraiser for “Save Mike’s Head” at Duke’s that will go into the night. Anyone is invited to join.

Stand up paddle fundraiser to Save Mike’s Head

May 26th, 2009, 10:59 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

fisherA group of stand up paddleboarders will be embarking on a journey from Malibu to Huntington Beach Wednesday to raise money for Mike Fisher, a Huntington Beach High School student who is battling brain cancer.

The group of five will start off at Duke’s in Malibu before sunrise for the 50-mile journey, each doing 10 miles of the trek along the Southern California coastline. Fisher, an avid surfer, will do the last leg of the event and arrive at Duke’s in Huntington Beach between 2:30 and 4 p.m.

“Ever since (he was diagnosed), he has had the aloha spirit,” said Fisher’s surf coach Andy Verdone, who is organizing the event.

Fisher has a strong connection to the ocean, getting into the water every single day no matter what the conditions.

“He loves the joy of surfing, the joy of the ocean, the ebb and flow of the tides and the movement. He’s part fish,” Verdone said.

The fundraiser will help raise money for Fisher’s $12,000-a-month treatment – which is not covered by insurance – to make sure he gets his daily dose of 42 pills a day.

“There’s never been one of those moments where all hope is lost. It gets tough. No one ever said life was easy. So you have to deal,” Fisher said in an interview a few months ago.

Huntington Beach lifeguards will meet the paddlers during the last leg of the paddle to ensure they make it in safe.

The fundraiser for Fisher will continue through the night as part of Duke’s Big Wednesday, which they do each week to benefit various causes. Supporters can purchase a T-shirt made by O’Quinn clothing company at the event, or go to savemikeshead.org for more info.

“It’s going to be a great thing for everyone, in terms of understanding a young man’s plight against brain cancer,” said Verdone.

When: Wednesday, May 27; paddlers hoping to get in between 2:30 - 4 p.m., with fundraiser all night at Duke’s

Where: Duke’s at the Huntington Beach Pier

Fundraiser for HB surfer Mike Fisher

April 13th, 2009, 9:31 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

A fundraiser is being held for Huntington surfer Mike Fisher, a member of the high school surf team recently diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer.

If you’ve been anywhere around downtown Huntington, you’ve probably seen the fliers for “Save Mike’s Head.”

This Thursday is your chance to give back. From 3 to 9 p.m.,  Mo’s BBQ at 301 Main Street will be donating 10 percent of their proceeds to the Save Mike’s Head fund. Mike and his family will be there around 6 p.m. to meet people.

I met up with Fisher, 17, not too long ago for a story on his fight against the cancer. The surfing community as a whole has really come together for Fisher since he was diagnosed last October.

He decided against doing chemotherapy, opting for alternative medicine that is working really well, but not covered by insurance - meaning the out-of-pocket expense is about $12,000. Needless to say, any help the family can get is appreciated.

He’s really an amazing kid who hasn’t let the cancer get the best of him, staying positive and strong throughout the battle. Read more about it here.

Garage sale fundraser for Mike Fisher

March 24th, 2009, 1:42 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

If you get a chance to swing by - or have any goods you can donate - a garage sale fundraiser is going to be held for Mike Fisher, a Huntington Beach surf team member recently diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer.

The fundraiser will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at 624 11th St. in Huntington Beach.

You may recognize Mike’s struggle from fliers posted around Huntington reading “Save Mike’s Head,” or from a story I wrote a few weeks back. Check it out here.

He had a golf ball-size brain tumor removed in October, and is on some heavy duty treatment - which seem to be working, but it’s not covered by insurance.

He’s a really inspiring, strong kid, so if you can help out in some way this weekend, it’s a great cause!

Help “Save Mike’s Head” - Surfer paddles toward recovery

March 10th, 2009, 5:24 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

I just finished writing up an article on Huntington Beach surfer Mike Fisher, a 17-year-old who is battling brain cancer.

Fisher is really an amazing kid - one of the most optimistic, strongest people I’ve met in my years of being a journalist.

Through our interview, he said so many things that make all the small stuff we fret over everyday just disappear. Here’s a few snippets of what he has to say:

” There’s never been one of those moments where all hope is lost. It gets tough. No one ever said life was easy. So you have to deal.”

“They tell you that you can’t beat it. If they tell me I can’t do it, I’ll do it tenfold.”

“Recovery is a safe way of saying nothing has gone wrong so far.”

“When people cry or say ‘why me?’ it’s so selfish. Handle your business. If you handle business –with confidence – you’ll be OK.”

If you get a chance, read the whole article. It has ways you can help him in his battle.

Fundraising efforts continue to “Save Mike’s Head”

February 17th, 2009, 10:58 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

If you’ve been around Huntington Beach, you’ve heard of the fight to “Save Mike’s Head.”

Mike Fisher, a Huntington Beach High School senior and member of the surf team, was diagnosed a few months ago with stage 3 brain cancer.

The community has done a great job stepping up to get Fisher the care he needs, raising more than $70,000 for his treatments.

I was out of town in October, when a packed house of about 1,500 people showed up at the high school gym for “Movie Night,” where they raised $40,000 - $20,000 from actor Jim Carrey. Also, Hurley is working on a benefit concert.

Family friend Brenda Berry said it’s been amazing watching the community come together, but that help is still  needed.

“Surfers really do try and take care of each other. But man, they came together so fast,” she said.  ”It was just heartbreaking to see how stunned and heartbroken everyone is.”

One way to contribute is to check out the 10th annual Arden Taylor Surf Benefit, which has named Fisher this year’s recipient. The longboard event is coming up the weekend of March 14 at C Street in Ventura. To register online  go to www.ardentaylor.com, or to learn about Mike’s story go to www.caringbridge.org/visit/mikeefisher.

Keep posted for more info on Mike and ways to help.
