Surf stars and icons honored at Jack’s Walk of Fame

July 23rd, 2009, 3:59 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Surfers of different generations were honored today for their common love of one thing: waves.

In front of a crammed crowd in front of Jack’s Surfboards, the Surfing Walk of Fame paid tribute to iconic surfers who paved the way for a future generation. At the same time, winners of the 2009 O.C. Surfer of the Year contest were given awards for being fan favorites of ocregister.com online voters.

The morning started with the O.C. Surfers of the Year being introduced by Peter “P.T.” Townend. More than 600,000 votes were cast during a six-week period for the contest, which was put on by the Orange County Register.

The winners include: Brett Simpson (shortboarder), Joe Aaron (longboarder), Courtney Conlogue (Rising Star Female), and Andrew Doheny (Rising Star Male).

Surfers got creative when it came to generating votes, posting updates on their Twitters and Facebooks.

Simpson said it was an honor to be included in an event where the Walk of Fame surfers were being honored.

“That’s a pretty awesome feat. Hopefully, one day when I get older, I can be there too,” he said.

The Surfing Walk of Fame paid tribute to five surfers who have had an influence on the sport of surfing. The nominees were selected from a group of 200 surf journalists from around the world. Those honored include: Duke Boyd, the man behind Hang Ten, four-time world champion Wendy Botha, Fred Hemmings, considered the godfather of professional surfing, and local hero Jackie Baxter.

The surfers who will be honored at the Surfing Walk of Fame in front of Jack’s Surfboards at 10 a.m. July 23 were announced today.

This is the 16th class of inductees and includes Fred Hemmings, Duke Boyd, Wendy Botha, Mark Martinson and Jackie Baxter.

The open-to-the-public ceremony takes place in front of Jack’s Surfboards located on the corner of PCH and Main.

Also don’t forget - this year’s OC Surfer of the Year winners - Brett Simpson, Courtney Conlogue, Andrew Doheny, and Joe Aaron  - will be honored at the Walk of Fame.

Here’s more from the release:

Local Hero: Jackie Baxter
A fearless regular footer from Huntington Beach, Jackie earned his reputation by tackling Pipeline and Sunset Beach in the late ‘60s.  Baxter grew up in Venice in the ‘50s.  By age 12 he was hitchhiking for rides to Malibu with his “wood” Velzy or Jacobs surfboards in hand.  By the mid ‘60s Jackie was riding for Dewey Weber and, in 1967, Sonny Vardeman introduced a Jackie Baxter Model—the same year he moved to Hawaii.  In 1971, he was an invitee to the prestigious 1971 Duke Kahanamoku Classic.  His son Josh is a world-class longboarder.

Hang Ten founder Duke Boyd was born in Kansas City in 1934 and began surfing at age 12 in Waikiki.  In 1960 Boyd asked seamstress Doris Boeck to stitch together a durable pair of surf trunks he designed.  The first-ever “board-shorts” to be capable of withstanding the rigors of surfing were an instant success with surfers and beach-goers along the California coast and the Hang Ten brand was born.  For the next decade, the company’s trademark horizontal stripes and personality-filled ad campaign took the surf world by storm.  Boyd sold Hang Ten in 1970 and later played a roll in the success of Lightning Bolt.

Woman of the Year: Wendy Botha
A prolific South African surfer, Wendy won four world titles (1987, 1989, 1991 & 1992) and three Surfer Poll Awards (1990, 1991 & Read the rest of this entry »

Looking for a free meal?

I just saw this posting in our Zvents calendar listing - by the way, if you have an event it’s a great way to get the word out - about Rusty holding a BBQ down at Jack’s Surfboards on Saturday in Dana Point and Monday in Newport Beach.  The Dana Point branch is also going to have a raffle, giveaways and 20 - 30 percent off selected items.

Here’s more details from their listing:

Since the temps have been on the rise and we’re finally starting to see an end to the June Gloom here in Southern California, we’re breaking out the grills and cooking up food at our Newport location.

This time the guys from Rusty are pitching in to help us feed everyone. So how do you go about getting free food you ask?

Well, it’s easy, just purchase anything from our store. It can be a bar of wax, a surfboard, a key chain, a sticker, whatever and your receipt is your pass to delicious BBQ treats. We’re firing up the grills at 11, so take an early lunch or just swing by after surfing and we’ll get some food in your belly.

Icons to be honored at Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame announced

July 2nd, 2008, 10:21 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The list of surfing greats who will be honored this year at the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame celebration was just released, a list naming a diverse group of icons with various surfing backgrounds.

The Surfing Walk of Fame’s ceremony honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport and culture of surfing, and will be held at 10 a.m. July 24 in front of Jack’s Surfboards. The Walk of Fame, started in 1994, honors surfing legends in six different categories every year.

This year’s honorees include Andy Irons, Rich Chew, Lynn Boyer, Wayne Lynch, Buzzy Trent and Drew Kampion.  The six founding members of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) will earn a place on the Walk of Fame’s Honor Roll.

Those selected were chose by an international panel of surfers.

Here’s a quick bio of each surfer:

Andy Irons (Surfing Champion): Reared on the dangerous and shallow reefs of Kauai, Irons’ was a standout amateur in the ’90s.  While he may have struggled after turning pro in 1998, Irons hunger for victory led him to win three consecutive ASP World Titles, four Vans Triple Crown awards, two Pipeline Masters crowns and two U.S. Open of Surfing titles, the first of which came 10 years ago (1998) making him eligible for the Walk of Fame ballot.
