“These young men risked everything to become the best surfers in the world, and …  their courage and vision began a cultural revolution that led to the birth of professional surfing and ultimately what has become today’s billion-dollar surf industry,” according to a press release about the event.

During the winter of 1975 in Hawaii, surfing was shaken to its core.  A group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a sport, a culture and an industry that is today worth billions of dollars and has captured the imagination of the world. 

With a radical new approach and a brash colonial attitude, these surfers crashed headlong into culture that was not ready for revolution.

Other surfers in the film: Cairns, Townend, Michael Tomson, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Barry Kanaiaupuni and “Fast Eddie” Rothman.  The film is distributed by Screen Media Films.

The Surfing Walk of Fame happens first at 10 a.m. on Thursday in front of Jack’s Surfboards. The Walk of Fame – where famous names line the sidewalk – started in 1994.

This year’s honorees include: Andy Irons (Surfing Champion), Rich Chew (Local Hero), Lynn Boyer (Woman of the Year), Wayne Lynch (Surfing Pioneer), Buzzy Trent (Surfing Pioneer) and Drew Kampion (Surfing Culture).  The six founding members of the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) will earn a place on the Walk of Fame’s Honor Roll.
The Surfers’ Hall of Fame will take place at 10 a.m. Friday. The Hall of Fame  – now in its 11th year – is a collection of about 30 hand and footprints of surf icons gathered through the years, set into cement and placed into the sidewalk at

Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street in Huntington Beach.

The Hall of Fame started in the Huntington Surf and Sport store, where many of the concrete slabs still remain. HSS owner Aaron Pai got the idea from the famous Chinese Theater – where he visited as a kid – and wanted to bring the concept to the sport of surfing.
The honorees selected for the Hall of Fame include:  Mike Parsons (Big wave surfer), Brad Gerlach (Big wave surfer), Sean Collins (creator of Surfline.com), and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew (former World Champion, president of ASP).
