The Black Hole surf shop opening

August 25th, 2009, 5:51 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

black-hole-surf-shopIf you can’t seem to find many old school core surf shops in this neck of the woods these days, then check this out.

Just recently a store called The Black Hole opened its doors in Costa Mesa.  The name sounds much more like a record store than a surf shop, and that it is…

The shop sits on a stretch of Newport Boulevard where you can find a handful of other cool stores.

Once inside you won’t find your typical surf inspired clothing brands, but more of the basics like retro longboards hanging from the ceiling, a few wetsuits, some old surf books and even a person who can fit you for a custom pair of surf trunks.

This Friday night is The Black Hole’s grand opening party.  It’s all ages and includes music by the Japanese Motors and Gantez Warrior, a BBQ and free cocktails for those 21 and over.

When: Friday, August 28th at 7:30 p.m

Where: The Black Hole, Costa Mesa

Greg Weaver art show

August 20th, 2009, 5:19 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

He’s considered of the most underground surf cinematographers, but quite the legend, too.

Greg Weaver has been making surf movies and shooting still photos for nearly 50 years.

In just over a week from now some of his amazing work will be on display in Orange County.

One of  Weaver’s most notable surf flicks is “Chasing the Lotus”, which was released in 2006.  That film is made up of some very rare 8mm film, still photos, and interviews with several surf legends from around the globe.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Greg Weaver art show which will include a night of art, food, drinks, music and movies.  If you’d like the chance to meet a legend, then mark your calenders for next Friday night.

When: Friday, August 28, 2009 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Where: Hurley HQ, 1945 Placentia Avenue, Costa Mesa 92627

Bikini contest for a cause

August 19th, 2009, 10:55 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Surfrider Foundation held a fundraiser party at Chronic Cantina last Sunday, featuring everything from a dunk tank, a mechanical surf board, a bikini contest to a hula hoop contest.

“Overall it was successful, and people are looking forward to next year’s Surfrider event! In this hard economy, people still paid the $15 to support a good cause, while having a good time,” according to event planner Raquel Figlo.

Soon, friends were hitting him up for boards. And a business began.

“It’s awesome. I get to do what I’m passionate about and love everyday. I’m truly blessed, you can’t ask for a better life,” he said.
