Things to do on the O.C. coast this weekend

August 28th, 2009, 7:28 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Just when you thought summer was winding down, the heat wave hits. With this crazy weather hitting the county as we kick off the weekend, you can bet the beaches are going to be packed.

If you are headed to the coast, make sure you use extreme caution, especially Friday. A big hurricane swell sent pounding waves to the coast Thursday, and novice swimmers are being warned to be careful of big waves and rip currents through the weekend.

So if you’re looking to find out what’s going on - to either join the festivities or to avoid the crowds - here’s a glimpse of what’s happening along OC’s coast this weekend:

swim1-mile swim at Corona Del Mar this weekend

The Don Burns 1-mile scholarship swim is happening down at Corona del Mar on Saturday.

The event is held in honor of Burns, who was a lifeguard for 47 years before he died 16 years ago.

The race - which typically draws hundreds of swimmers - will be held at 10 a.m. at Big Corona Beach. Check in starts at 9:15 a.m. at tower 3, next to the jetty.

Swimmers go out to a buoy 100-yards offshore, then go down coast along the swim lines, past cliff side homes and the rocky coastline to the secluded cove of Little Corona. They then round buoys on their right shoulder, return up coast to the first buoy, and swim to an onshore finish at the starting line.

When: 10 a.m. Saturday

Where: Corona Del Mar State Beach

Catalina Classic paddleboard race

August 19th, 2009, 6:32 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

paddleboard-raceWe all know if you surf on a regular basis that you become a pretty stronger paddler, but can you imagine what it would be like trying to paddle 32 miles across the open ocean?

That’s what a handful of amazing athletes will be trying to conquer in a little over a week at the annual Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race.

Unfortunately, if you think you have what it takes, not just anybody can take part in this prestigious event.

There are a few requirements to enter the Catalina Classic paddleboard race.  The paddler must have completed last years race by the 9 hour cut-off time or competed in another notable paddleboard competition with a solid standing.

Last years Catalina Classic winner Chad Carvin completed the grueling 32- mile race in 5 hours and four minutes.

Did Irvine woman complete the Catalina Channel swim?

August 14th, 2009, 12:19 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

beachwatch0812Jen Schumacher stroked through the dark waters starting at midnight in Catalina, and after just 10 hours reached the shore in Palos Verdes.

As she crawled over the rocks to reach dry land, family members cheered the success of her accomplishment: a 21- mile swim in under 10 hours.

According to the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation, a group that organizes and tracks people who do this treacherous swim, there have only been about 163 people on record who have done the course since 1927.

Schumacher, 24, of Irvine, got the idea after being a support swimmer for friend and swim partner David Galli, who did the course last summer.

She saw him struggle through the emotions, and how people supported him when the swim got tough — and how accomplished he felt when he tackled the feat.

She’s had trained for months for the feat, getting up in the early-morning hours to do rigorous training, spending up to hours and hours stroking through the waters along the coastline.

The preparation paid off, with support swimmers hardly able to keep up.

“I’m exhausted. I feel great,” she said. “I’m going to take a monster nap,” Schumacher told KTLA.

Check out this video from KTLA that shows her at the finish line.

A part of the proceeds Schumacher raised w ill go to the Surfrider Foundation, a cause she picked after passing junk in the water while she was training.

Check out Schumacher’s blog to hear more about her swim.
