Sand Shots: OC beaches get hot

June 18th, 2009, 7:15 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Finally, the sun broke through the overcast skies. hb_slide3

I went down to Huntington Beach today to check out the crowds, and it seemed like everyone ditched out on work and school to hang out on the sand.

There was a lot happening down there - a fight nearly broke out in the parking lot right when I got there, a lifeguard rescued a boogie boarder stuck in rip current.

But mostly - people were just chillin’ out.

It was a beautiful day down at the beach, and the weekend is supposed to just as nice. Finally, summer can start…

Here’s some snapshots of people hangin’ at the beach on Thursday.

Things to do on OC beaches this weekend

There’s tons of stuff to get into this weekend down at the beach, so hopefully these gloomy skies will fade to allow for some sunny skies along Orange County beaches. Here’s some ideas on what to do:

750 students make message in the sand during clean up

June 4th, 2009, 5:09 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Great effort today by Orange County Coastkeeper volunteers and the hundreds of school kids who came out for a beach clean up at Bolsa Chica State Beach.

It was great to see the kids doing their part - and hopefully taking this mindset of a clean beach with them as they get older.

The Ocean Day is something that started about 14 years ago in Malibu, and now stretches up and down the California Coast. The idea is to get school kids out to the beach for the day to educate them about the environment.

Another pretty amazing thing was this human message they formed in the sand. Click on the image below for more photos, and read the story here (on ocregister.com)
