AVP brings volleyball to Surf City

May 24th, 2009, 6:10 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Just got back from the big AVP tourney down in Huntington Beach, where thousands showed up south of the pier to watch world-class players battle it out on the sand.

Some say the crowds were a bit thin - perhaps because people were out of town for the holiday weekend, or maybe it was the absence of Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor of Costa Mesa and Kerri Walsh.

Still, die-hard volleyball enthusiasts showed up to watch the games from the sand, and even more checked out the fun stuff they had in the festival area. Check out AVP photos and more on ocregister.com.

AVP results from Friday

May 22nd, 2009, 8:23 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

After a full day of volleyball on the sand during the first competition day of the AVP Crocs Pro Beach Volleyball Tour ,  the reigning Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists proved they aren’t going to give up their title easily.

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers battled it out on the sand on the south side of the Huntinton Beach Pier on Friday, going undefeated throughout the day.

The team on Saturday will go up against Huntington Beach’s Ed Ratledge and Ryan Mariano.

On the women’s side, Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs also moved on unscathed, according to a press release sent out by AVP.
Both second seeds - Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal and Jen Kessy/April Ross - also moved on undefeated.

There’s more happening than just the competitions - stop by to check out some of the booths, and free giveaways. Here’s more about what they’re handing out on site.

The competitions go on through Sunday. For tickets, go to  www.avp.com

AVP tourney already in full swing today

May 22nd, 2009, 3:06 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

avp_slideStopped in at the AVP Crocs Pro Beach Volleyball Tour this afternoon, and the sand was already packed with people checking out the event on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

For player Jenny Kropp - who was standing on the sand between matches - it’s nice to have the tournament close to her Manhattan Beach home.

“It’s nice that it’s local, so we don’t have to travel,” she said of having the tournament on Orange County beaches. The team won their first match.

“We’ll see how it goes… but we’ll win,” she said of her next game.

There was tons of action going on - and while volleyball might be the highlight, there’s a lot of other things to get into.

Michael Adams, of Dana Point, decided to sit down at the Paul Mitchell booth to get his hair cut. Hair cuts through the weekend are $10, with the money going towards “Food for Africa.”

“Efficiency of time,” he said. “I’m on the beach getting a haircut. Beats going to the barber,” he said.

There’s also a bunch of free swag - at the Malibu Rum tent, shake a coconut and if it makes a sound, win stuff like beach volleyballs (no booze at the tent, sorry). At the Barefoot wine booth, grab key chains and bags. Naked Juice is also on site handing out samples.

Congrats to AVP VIP ticket winners!

May 22nd, 2009, 2:01 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Congrats to winners Theressa Schaaf and Kevin Keyes, who won our AVP VIP ticket giveaway this morning!

They were stoked on the tickets when I dropped them off at the pier this afternoon - Theressa cut out of work early and was meeting a friend to watch the games (and hopefully enjoying a cold one as I write this), and Kevin was giving the tickets to his daughter and her friend, both who play on the Uni High varsity team.

Check back on OrangeCounty.com for more giveaways!
