Newport Beach local makes PacSun USA Surf Team

September 7th, 2009, 8:10 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

andrew-dohenyOne of North America’s best 16 and under surfers has made another big accomplishment.  Newport Beach’s Andrew Doheny is the most recent addition to the PacSun USA Surf Team.

Doheny has been a top competitor for several years in the NSSA and is currently rated number four on the ASP North America Pro Junior Tour.

He was chosen by PacSun USA Surf Team Head Coach Ian Cairns to be one of five surfers to represent the U.S. in the boys 18 and under division.

When Doheny’s not competing or on a photo trip to some remote surf spot, he can be found ripping up his backyard, 54th street in Newport Beach.

Andrew Doheny’s sponsors include Volcom clothing and wetsuits, Vans shoes, Electric Visual, JS Surfboards, Creatures of Leisure surfing accessories, Sex Wax , Vestal Watches and HSS surf shop.

Top seeds set sights on ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure

June 22nd, 2009, 3:27 pm by rshadley

The fourth stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Pro Junior Series - the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure presented by Jack’s - will be the most critical event on all surfer’s campaigns towards qualification for the ASP World Junior Championships due to its ASP Grade-4 status.

Newport Beach stand out Andrew Doheny, who is the current regional series ratings leader, is among the top juniors to compete in Huntington Beach on Friday and Saturday.

With all surfers on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series looking to compile their best four results this year in an attempt to finish within the top three in order to earn an ASP World Junior Championships berth, the additional points on offer at this year’s only ASP Grade-4 event will play a crucial role in all surfer’s overall rating for 2009.

Doheny was the only American finalist in last year’s Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure and is currently sitting atop the ASP North America Pro Junior Series ratings after three events. The stylish regular-footer hopes to capitalize on the additional points on offer at the upcoming contest in order to extend his ratings lead over the field, but knows he is up against a barrage of tough competition.

“Last year I was in disbelief to make the final with those guys,” Doheny said. “It was fun to surf against one of my favorite surfers, Julian Wilson. It’s gnarly with all the international guys doing the contest, but guys like Dillon Perillo, Conner Coffin and Nat Young are just as good as the international boys to me.”

OC Surfer of the Year update

June 17th, 2009, 3:55 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Just got out of a meeting with Peter “PT” Townend, and stoked he’s going to be the one presenting the awards at the Jack’s Walk of Fame for this year’s OC Surfer of the Year winners.

We’re about half way through the contest, which launched the end of May and will wrap up on July 9. We’ve had amazing response, with more than 200,000 votes submitted. It’s been a really exciting contest to follow - with the females gaining more votes than any of the men, and a battle going on between Brad Ettinger and Brett Simpson for the shortboarders. If you haven’t voted, take a second to cast your pick for your favorite OC surfer - remember, only 10 votes per hour!

Here’s how it’s looking as I’m writing this for the four segments:surferlogobig

Shortboarders: Brett Simpson, 20,542 votes

Longboarder: Joe Aaron, 14,299

Rising Star Male: Andrew Doheny, 19,676

Rising Star Female: Taylor Pitz, 40,274
