October 11th, 2009, 7:12 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

ritzcarlton_lagunaniguelIt seems more and more people are picking up the sport of surfing.  And that means a lot more surf camps are being offered.

Well how about shacking up at a 5-star resort for a night and getting a one on one surf lesson from a pro surfer?

That’s what Billabong and the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel are offering until the end of the year.  The surf clothing giant and premier Southern California resort have teamed up to offer luxury surfing vacation packages.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a child or an adult, a first timer or an experienced surfer who is looking for a few tips from a pro.

All surf lessons include: wetsuits, surfboards, leashes, wax and individual instruction from a Billabong sponsored pro surfer and overnight accomodations at the Ritz-Carlton resort.

The Billabong Surf Experience runs through December 31, 2009 with rates starting at $495.00 per night.  For more info. or to book a reservation, check out the ritzcarlton.com.

Huntington announces spring surf camps

March 25th, 2009, 10:43 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Want to improve your surf skills? Check out this program just announced:

The City of Huntington Beach and HB Surf School will be offering  two surf camp sessions during Spring Break. The surf camps, run by Bill Sharp, who heads the city’s Learn to Surf program, will run Monday – Friday, from 8:30 am – 11:30 am the week of April 6 - 10 and April 13 -17.

These one-week camps are designed to help advanced beginner/intermediate surfers take their skills to the next level. For those who have the basics down, this program will help improve overall paddling and board riding ability, master a variety of basic and advanced maneuvers, understand tides and swell, and learn important ocean safety. For those who desire to compete, competitive analysis and techniques will also be covered. There are no age restrictions but camp surfers should be proficient ocean swimmers.

Want to surf? Go to school

August 4th, 2007, 12:56 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

What’s that? You live in Orange County and don’t know how to surf? That’s inexcusable, especially given all the willing, experienced surf teachers around.

We’ve rounded up most of the surf schools operating in Orange County. Their info is below, organized by city. The list’s main focus on multi-day camps for summer 2007, but many places offer other deals year round — private lessons, group lessons, day camps, corporate events — so check their websites, call their phones, or just head to the beach and ask around.

Keep an eye on ocregister.com/beaches for surf conditions and news.
