Surf shots: Wednesday waves at Salt Creek

If you’re stuck in the office today and didn’t get a chance to check out the surf, I was out at Salt Creek and pulled together a slideshow of the action.

Waves were fun, and word is there’s more on the way - so you might want to start developing a cough to convince your boss you need to be out of the office for a bit. Here’s some snaps from earlier today, and check out the full slideshow here.

Surf shots: Swell comes in, snaps from HB and Newport

The swell came in a bit later than expected, but there were plenty to be had today as it reached Orange County’s shore.

Waves were getting in the 6-foot range down in Huntington Beach this morning, and though a bit smaller down in Newport there were plenty of surfers out catching waves.

Hurley Pro: Snapshot from practice session

The Hurley Pro was put on hold today, but the surfers went out for a bit of a practice session mid-day at Trestles.

OrangeCounty.com’s Kris Heineman was down there today and got some snapshots of the action. Check them out here. Contest is set to run all day on Saturday.

Swell drops a bit, but still fun waves to be had

The swell dropped a bit on Friday, with a lot of people saying “you should have been here yesterday, it was amazing!”

Well, there were still plenty of waves coming through in Newport Beach this morning. I started out at the Point, then cruised down to the Wedge to see what was happening.

Surf shots: Doho gets messy

I shot down to Doheny State Beach this morning to snap some photos of people who went out for a surf today as the swell continues.

Sometimes you get a good day, like over the weekend in Newport Beach. Today was a bit of a bummer, with messy, sloppy conditions. But still, it was fun to watch these surfers take on the waves, and battle through the strong currents and whitewash.

Also took some snaps of people hanging on the beach, the lucky ones who got to beat the heat by heading to the coast.

Surf shots: Photos of West Newport on Sunday

With the winds calming down on Sunday, and an anticipated southwest swell holding strong, the beaches were packed with surfers out to get some action.

I cruised down to West Newport on Sunday to check out the waves, and there were plenty to be had. Though they were a bit closed out at times, surfers were having fun as the surf rolled in.

The surf in this area was hitting about 3 - 4 foot, with occasional 5 footers.

Surfline: Big swell shot from sky shows OC beaches getting slammed

While most of us were sitting on the shore watching the coast get pounded from that massive south swell that brought waves up to 20 feet to Orange County’s beaches, Newport’s Tom Cozad was capturing it all from a different perspective.

Cozad - most known for his Web site Newportsurfshots.com - was working with Surfline.com to pull together this amazing slideshow. And knowing that Cozad is scared of heights, please make sure you take a few seconds to check it out.

He captured some amazing images - people looking like the size of ants sitting on the shore watching the Wedge go off, the massive rip current whirlpools making big brown circle formations, and my personal favorite - a dolphin putting on a show for surfers as it leaped from a huge wave.

From Cozad’s first person on Newportsurfshots.com: “… while I was a little bummed that I didn’t capture a lot of surfing, Bill Sharp said something that put it in perspective. ‘Who cares about surfing when nature is getting freaky’?”

Sand Shots: US Open Day 5

Sand Shots: U.S Open of Surfing opening weekend

Even though the opening weekend of the U.S. Open of Surfing is typically pretty mellow, the action was heating up on the sand the past few days on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Men and women juniors battled it out during the Nike 6.0 Juniors, and the men’s trials went down with some stoked surfers excited they are going to compete in the contest.
