Surf shots: Wednesday waves at Salt Creek

October 21st, 2009, 2:35 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

If you’re stuck in the office today and didn’t get a chance to check out the surf, I was out at Salt Creek and pulled together a slideshow of the action.

Waves were fun, and word is there’s more on the way - so you might want to start developing a cough to convince your boss you need to be out of the office for a bit. Here’s some snaps from earlier today, and check out the full slideshow here.

Surf shots: Swell comes in, snaps from HB and Newport

October 15th, 2009, 6:40 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The swell came in a bit later than expected, but there were plenty to be had today as it reached Orange County’s shore.

Waves were getting in the 6-foot range down in Huntington Beach this morning, and though a bit smaller down in Newport there were plenty of surfers out catching waves.

Check out some of the snaps we got out there in our slideshow, maybe we got one of you:

Swell drops a bit, but still fun waves to be had

August 28th, 2009, 1:32 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The swell dropped a bit on Friday, with a lot of people saying “you should have been here yesterday, it was amazing!”

Well, there were still plenty of waves coming through in Newport Beach this morning. I started out at the Point, then cruised down to the Wedge to see what was happening.

Here’s some snapshots:

Surf shots: Doho gets messy

August 27th, 2009, 4:10 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

I shot down to Doheny State Beach this morning to snap some photos of people who went out for a surf today as the swell continues.

Sometimes you get a good day, like over the weekend in Newport Beach. Today was a bit of a bummer, with messy, sloppy conditions. But still, it was fun to watch these surfers take on the waves, and battle through the strong currents and whitewash.

Also took some snaps of people hanging on the beach, the lucky ones who got to beat the heat by heading to the coast.

Check out these photos of the surf today, in case you were stuck behind your desk and you missed it:

Surf shots: Photos of West Newport on Sunday

August 23rd, 2009, 1:22 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

With the winds calming down on Sunday, and an anticipated southwest swell holding strong, the beaches were packed with surfers out to get some action.surf_slide2

I cruised down to West Newport on Sunday to check out the waves, and there were plenty to be had. Though they were a bit closed out at times, surfers were having fun as the surf rolled in.

The surf in this area was hitting about 3 - 4 foot, with occasional 5 footers.

Did you get some good surf this weekend? Tell us where you went in the comment section below.

And check out our slideshow of the surf in West Newport - maybe we caught you in action.

Surfline: Big swell shot from sky shows OC beaches getting slammed

July 30th, 2009, 12:02 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

While most of us were sitting on the shore watching the coast get pounded from that massive south swell that brought waves up to 20 feet to Orange County’s beaches, Newport’s Tom Cozad was capturing it all from a different perspective.

Cozad - most known for his Web site Newportsurfshots.com - was working with Surfline.com to pull together this amazing slideshow. And knowing that Cozad is scared of heights, please make sure you take a few seconds to check it out.

He captured some amazing images - people looking like the size of ants sitting on the shore watching the Wedge go off, the massive rip current whirlpools making big brown circle formations, and my personal favorite - a dolphin putting on a show for surfers as it leaped from a huge wave.

tomswell

From Cozad’s first person on Newportsurfshots.com: “… while I was a little bummed that I didn’t capture a lot of surfing, Bill Sharp said something that put it in perspective. ‘Who cares about surfing when nature is getting freaky’?”

Check out the photos here.

Sand Shots: U.S Open of Surfing opening weekend

July 19th, 2009, 7:44 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

usopenslide2Even though the opening weekend of the U.S. Open of Surfing is typically pretty mellow, the action was heating up on the sand the past few days on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Men and women juniors battled it out during the Nike 6.0 Juniors,  and the men’s trials went down with some stoked surfers excited they are going to compete in the contest.

We snapped some photos out on the sand, check out what was happening here.

The men’s trials continue starting at 7:30 a.m., check out a schedule here.

Session shots: Bolsa Chica

July 10th, 2009, 7:22 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

bolsa_slideIt was a great morning out at Bolsa Chica State Beach on Friday, fun waves and finally that wind calmed down for a bit.
If the weekend is going to be anything like today, make sure you get out there early or it will be packed in the water!

The water is pretty toasty too, let’s hope it stays that way for a bit.

Here’s some snaps from this morning, just in case you missed it.

Session shots: Girls training for NSSA

June 10th, 2009, 11:46 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

girls_slideDiane Edmonds, photographer for Eppicsurf.com, was out shooting photos of last weekend’s swell and caught these nice snaps of young girl surfers ripping down at Salt Creek on Saturday.

Among the surfers she captured on film was 16-year-old Lani Doherty, warming up for next week’s NSSA Nationals.

“She caused quite a stir ‘trunking it’ in her bikini in So Cal’s frigid water, which has to be about 20 degrees colder than her Maui homebreak,” wrote Edmonds.

Also featured is local stand out Taylor Pitz, who is a strong contender (with nearly 24,000 votes so far) for this year’s OC Surfer of the year. Check out the slideshow here, or click on the image above.

bolsa_slideThere hasn’t been much action out in the water lately, but OrangeCounty.com’s Matthew Ralston found a bit of bump at Bolsa to shoot.

He also randomly found people playing with sharks.

Session shots: The Wedge in Newport

May 8th, 2009, 5:05 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

wedgeslider

The Wedge in Newport Beach today was funky like the rest of the coast, but there were some peaky 6-footers rolling through.

Check out some shots from today.

If you didn’t see my post from earlier this week, the Wedge is off limits to boarders from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until late October. Read more about the Blackball.
