OC surfers going strong at O’Neill Cold Water Classic

November 4th, 2009, 2:58 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

UPDATE: WQS contest is on hold Thursday; Juniors up at 1 p.m.

From Wednesday: OC surfers are coming through strong during this week’s O’Neill Cold Water Classic and Oakley Pro Junior up in Santa Cruz.

The Cold Water Classic – a WQS 6-star prime event – kicked off on Monday with solid surf conditions, but was put on hold today. Some of the best surfers in the world – including many from Orange County – are up north for the prestigious event.

A call is made at 7:30 each morning to determine whether the WQS or Junior event will be held.

The juniors went at it today, with Newport local and one of OC’s top young surfers Andrew Doheny winning his heat with a score of 13.37.

In the first round of junior’s events, Newport’s Chase Wilson advanced with a score of 12.00, but in that same heat Taylor Thorne, of Newport, was knocked out after coming in 4th place.

Capo Beach’s Luke Davis and San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino both placed first in their heats to advance.

In the pro event, several World Tour surfers are taking on the World Qualifying Series surfers, making the competition tough.

World Tour surfer Timmy Reyes, of Huntington Beach, had a great showing Tuesday with the heat of the day, finishing with scores of 9.33 and 8.50.

“I knew where to sit out there,” he said in a statement. “I’ve been back and forth here my entire life. It makes it easy when you come to a place that you really like. I feel really good here.”

On the first day of the event, San Clemente’s Mike Losness was knocked out. HB’s  Micah Byrne had a great showing, with a score of 11.84 in heat 4 of round 128. He competed again Tuesday and made it through with a 10.03.

Seal Beach’s Chris Waring also came in first during his heat, scoring a 13.33.

If the pros compete on Thursday, Huntington surfers Brett Simpson and Brad Ettinger will be going up against each other early in the day. Simpson is the top point holder in North America in the WQS rankings.

HB’s Shaun Ward will be going up against some tough competition, as he goes up against Jordy Smith and three-time world champ Tom Curren.

The pro competitors are battling it out in 13 degree waters to see if they can nab a piece of the $145,000 in prize money. The juniors are surfing for $10,000.

xcel-proThe North Shore of Oahu is about to kick into high gear in the next few weeks.  The first contest of the winter season is about to start at Sunset Beach which is one of the top spots on the famous seven mile stretch of coast.

The 2009 Xcel Pro is a 2-star ASP World Qualifying Series event with several notable big wave chargers competing.   They include: 3-time World Champion Andy Irons, Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia and Pancho Sullivan.

Surfline forecasters are calling for a good northwest, north-northwest swell to start showing on Friday, which means the event could take to the water on the first day of the holding period.

The events official waiting period begins on Friday, October 30th and runs through Tuesday, November 10th. To watch the live action, check out xcelpro.xcelwetsuits.com.

October 19th, 2009, 6:02 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

rip-curl-search-posterThe second to last stop of the ASP World Championship Tour official waiting period kicked off today, but contest officials opted not to start the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal due to the lack of surf.

Surfline forecasters are calling for a pretty solid northwest swell to begin filling in on Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the title race continues with Mick Fanning holding down the lead with fellow Aussie Joel Parkinson trailing behind in second and Brazilian Adriano de Souza in third.

Contest organizers will reconvene Tuesday morning at 8 a.m for a possible 8:30 a.m start.  The official waiting period runs until Wednesday, October 28th.  To watch the live action, check out www.live.ripcurl.com.

Billabong Pro Mundaka wrap-up

October 14th, 2009, 6:17 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

adriano-de-souzaThe eighth stop of the ASP World Championship Tour wrapped up yesterday in Spain.

The 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka event looked more like a World Qualifying Series contest due to the less than favorable conditions throughout most of eight days.

Adriano de Souzaclaimed his first ASP Dream Tour win in the marginal two to three foot waves at the events backup surf spot, Sopelana.  The 22-year old Brazilian took down Aussie Chris Davidson 16.40 to 11.83.

Unfortunately, Mundaka, the world famous left hand point break never really came to life for the world’s top 45 surfers except on day one of the competition. De Souza now jumps up to number three in the WCT ratings, while Chris Davidson moves up to 20th.

Next stop on the Dream Tour will be the Rip Curl Pro Search in Peniche, Portugal.  The official waiting period runs Monday, October 19th through Wednesday, October 28th.  For all the latest, go to aspworldtour.com.

October 12th, 2009, 9:52 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

read_brettsimpson.att4pat-on-beachOC Register’s Fred Swegles reports that Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson and San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas have moved closer in their quests to qualify for surfing’s major leagues in 2010.

Simpson placed third and Gudauskas fifth in the $145,000 Rio Surf Pro International, a 6-star event in the Association of Surfing Professionals’ World Qualifying Series.

Gudauskas remains No. 4 in the WQS standings, like last week, but solidified his position. Simpson moved up from No. 9 to No. 6 in the standings. The top 15 WQS surfers normally qualify for the ASP World Championship Tour.

October 12th, 2009, 6:49 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

billabong-pro1The 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka event is finally back on today after a week without waves.

The 8th stop of the ASP World Championship Tour started back up Monday morning to finish the final eight heats of Round 1 and move onto the Round of 2.

The surf finally picked up a bit, but unfortunately the world’s best surfers had compete in fairly chewed up two to three foot waves at a spot called Sopelana before moving back to Mundaka for the start of Round 2.

Some of the competitors going home early after losing in Round 1 included: Huntington Beach’s Timmy Reyes, Oxnard’s Nathaniel Curran, Aussies Josh Kerr and Jay “Bottle” Thompson and Hawaii’s Dustin Barca.

Owen Wright qualifies for the 2010 Dream Tour

October 6th, 2009, 5:39 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

owen-wrightAussie Owen Wright has reason to be celebrating.  The young Australian phenom just secured himself a spot on next year’s ASP World Championship Tour after a 5th place finish at the Local Motion Pro at Guaruja in Brazil.

The lanky 6′3 goofy-footer has been grabbing the attention of the surf world for quite some time, but especially in the last year.

Wright started off 2009 focusing on the Junior Pro tour and some select ASP World Qualifying Series contests, but since then has dominated both series putting himself in 1st place on the Junior Pro rankings and currently 3rd on the WQS.

19-year old Owen Wright is known for his explosive backside attack as well as huge frontside and backside airs.  Wright’s sponsors include: Rip Curl clothing and wetsuits, Dragon Optics, FCS, Gorilla Grip and Bryne Surfboards.  Look for this ripper to do some serious damage on the 2010 Dream Tour.

Mick Fanning wins Hurley Pro

September 19th, 2009, 3:55 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Australian Mick Fanning took home the big check of $105,000 at today’s Hurley Pro at Trestles, the largest first-place purse in sport’s history.

The Hurley Pro gives surf fans the opportunity to watch the best surfers in the world battle it out as they try to gain points on the ASP World Tour. The stop at Trestles is the 6th stop on the 10 stop tour, and the only contest held in North America.

Nearly 5,000 people showed up on the sand to watch as Fanning won against Ventura’s Dane Reynolds, who had a stellar performance through the entire contest.

“It’s all about gaining momentum again, and getting that hunger back,” he said about advancing in the World Tour rankings. The Hurley Pro is the only North American stop on the tour.

Fanning congratulated Reynolds on his performance.

“He’s only at the start of what will happen in the next few years,” he said. When asked what he will do with the prize money, he thought for a second: “Mortgage.”

Spectator Stewart Donald showed up at the contest through the week, and watched as Fanning practiced hard every morning.

“He’s a phenomenal worker. It looks fun, but he put in a lot of work,” Donald said

- From earlier todaydsc_03842

Fanning - the 2007 world champ - took out nine-time world champ Kelly Slater, who was a front runner to win the Hurley Pro. Since the contest started in 2001, Slater has won the event three times, including the past two years.

Slater only had 10.74 heat total in the semifinal, his opponent Mick Fanning earning a 16.26. As Slater came out of the water, he got an applause from fans.

Reynolds - of Ventura - earned a spot after a heat total of 16.77 in the semifinals. Reynolds has been doing really well during the competition, taking out wildcard Rob Machado earlier in the day.

This is Reynolds first career final. He has been on the tour for two years, and is currently ranked 20th on the tour.

Reyes and wildcard Brett Simpson - were knocked out earlier in the week.

Brazilian Adriano de Souza (who recently moved to Laguna Beach), posted a  heat score of 15.50 to win against Josh Kerr. He was later taken out by Bede Durbidge during the quarterfinals.

Rob Machado was taken out of the contest by Dane Reynolds at about 10 a.m. today. Machado had taken out Joel Parkinson, who was leading in points on the World Tour. He also took out Taj Burrow, who was 4th in the ranking.

The contest is offering the largest first place purse in the history of surfing: $105,000 to the winner, up $5,000 from the previous record of $100,000 given to Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing.

Slater takes out last local surfer at Hurley Pro

September 15th, 2009, 10:09 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Those waiting for the golden underdog moment in the match with Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson against nine-time world champ Kelly Slater have a lot to be disappointed about.

Simpson - who had a magical showing to win the title against some of the world’s best surfers at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing - couldn’t keep the momentum as Slater ripped away his chances at advancing at the Hurley Pro.

The best surfers in the world are down at Trestles to compete through the week at the only Association of Surfing Professional World Tour stop in North America.

Before his heat, Simpson said he had nothing to lose during the battle against Slater.

But as they got out in the water, Simpson just couldn’t gain the points he needed as Slater took waves that trumped any score Simpson posted.

A long lull in the middle of the heat didn’t help, as surfers searched the horizon for any bump that turn into something to ride.

“It’s frustrating when you’re that far behind, and there’s no waves,” Simpson said as he came out of the water, kids approaching him for autographs. “I caught an average wave, he caught that bomb. That  pretty much shut the door on me.”

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Brightcove video.

In the heat before his, Rob Machado barely beat out Joel Parkinson, who is the highest on the point ratings.

“It was really close. We were trying to catch all the waves we could,” Machado said. “I felt like I wasn’t really surfing that great. It’s just good to get through.”

Beating Slater would be “added bonus” for Simpson

September 15th, 2009, 8:26 am by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

read_brettsimpson.att4I had a quick chat with Huntington Beach surfer Brett Simpson, who is gearing up this morning for his heat against nine-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Simpson propelled from an up-and-comer to a surfer to be reckoned with during the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing, taking out a pool of some of the world’s top surfers to nab the title last July.

Even though he had surgery recently for a bone chip in his ankle, he put on a stellar performance on Sunday, the first day of the Hurley Pro, when he won a heat against Australian Taj Burrow, busting out a move that judges didn’t even have a name for.

This morning, he was out studying the water before his big heat with Slater, which is scheduled for about 9:15 a.m. “It’s an exciting morning,” he said. ”I don’t have much to lose. It’s a good experience.”

dsc_0142

Kelly Slater walks into the competitor area this morning

Simpson said he’s going to continue what he’s been doing, and see if he can put up a good fight against Slater, who has won the Hurley Pro (back when it was known as the Boost Mobile Pro) three times, and is reigning champion.

While Simpson might not have much to lose, he has a lot to gain. Simpson is currently on the World Qualifying Tour and is on the cusp of making it to the elite level of the World Tour where surfers such as Slater compete.

“If I can beat Kelly, it’s just an added bonus of this great year,” he said. “I’m not really scared, but I am nervous. I think I perform best under those moments. I’ll just go out and have fun.”

This morning’s conditions: Peaky 2 - 4 foot waves with light offshore winds, south swell continues. Rob Machado surfs at about 8:30 a.m. against Joel Parkinson. Watch the action live here.

FCS presents ‘What They Ride’ program

September 14th, 2009, 5:11 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

How many times have you been watching an ASP World Championship Tour contest online and wondered what the best pros are riding?kelly-slater1

Well many times the general public doesn’t get much information about their boards unless the announcers happen to give a little insight about a particular pro.

This week FCS, Fin Control System launched a new feature called ‘What They Ride’ where all of us in the general surf world can now find out the exact dimensions and shapes the best surfers in the world are riding.

Not only will you learn the secrets to their quivers, but some of the shapers themselves will even talk about what a certain surfer is riding.  It’s all being unveiled at The Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles this week.

So if you’re really itching to know what Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson are riding at Lowers this week, tune into the live webcast at TheHurleyPro.com.

Two OC surfers knocked out of Hurley Pro

September 14th, 2009, 1:54 pm by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The two local WCT surfers in the running to take home the Hurley Pro were knocked out this afternoon, leaving only a wild-card entry as the only possible hope for OC.

Timmy Reyes of Huntington Beach and San Clemente’s Chris Ward were both taken out of the Hurley Pro during afternoon heats.

Ward, who sits 25th on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour, said he had a good run during the middle of the heat against Australian Jay Thompson, but let his guard down.

“I let him have position. When you do that, the other surfer gets the wave. That’s what happened,” he said as he came out of the water.

The world’s top surfers are in town for the Hurley Pro, held at San Onofre State Beach at Trestles.

Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson - an up-and-comer on the World Qualifying Series -  is up against nine-time world champion Kelly Slater early Tuesday morning. Simpson - who just had surgery on his ankle for a chipped bone - advanced after winning his heat against Taj Burrow on Sunday.
