Stand up paddle boot camp

January 31st, 2010, 10:15 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

supIt seems more and more people are being introduced to stand up paddling these days.  Just about every surf spot you go to there’s someone in the lineup riding an SUP.

Now if you’re a beginner, it’s definitely not recommended to try one of these big boards where there are waves, but a place like a lake or in the harbor where the water is nice and calm.

The Stand Up Paddle Spot and the Newport Aquatic Center have teamed up to offer a Stand Up Paddle Boot Camp in the Back Bay of Newport Beach.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a first timer or an experienced stand up paddler.

The SUP Spot’s Stand Up Paddle Boot Camp takes individuals through a fun series of paddling techniques which help to strengthen those core muscles.  All SUP lessons are great for the young or old and are conducted year-round and in all weather conditions.

If  you’re looking for an amazing workout, then stop by the Newport Aquatic Center on Saturday, February 6th between 10 a.m to 2 p.m for a free preview of the different SUP classes.  For more info. email info@theSUPspot.com.

Schroff Surfboards making a comeback

January 30th, 2010, 10:11 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

schroff

If you grew up surfing in Orange County, especially around the Newport Beach area in the 80’s, then you’ll definitely remember these surfboards with the bright colored paint jobs.

Schroff Surfboards were the hot ticket amongst the Echo Beach crew.  Local Newport standouts such as Danny Kwock, Preston Murray and Jeff Parker were some of Schroff’s top team riders at the time.

Peter Schroff had a successful stint with shaping, but later on went on to pursue his first love…art.  Now more than twenty years later, the Newport Beach native is mowing foam once again.

Some of the popular shapes he has brought back include: the Blasters, Super Series, Circa 80’s, High Performance Twin and High Performance Quad.

Schroff Surfboards can be ordered online or you can visit the shop located at 3419 Via Lido #132, Newport Beach 92663.  For more info. check out Schroffsurfboards.com.

Todos Santos Big Wave contest

January 29th, 2010, 7:26 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

The World’s besttodos big wave surfers are gearing up for another major event.  This time 24 invited chargers are heading south of the border with hopes of scoring some really solid surf.  The 2010 Todos Santos Big Wave Event is held at a small island off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico.

This paddle-in only competition means you won’t find jet skies towing these surfers into giant bombs.  So the majority of these talented watermen will be riding much larger boards in order to get into the monstrous waves.

Most of the surfers will be breaking out their 9 to 11 foot guns, which are the same boards they would ride at Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore.

Some of the notable names taking part in the Todos Santos Big Wave Event include: 9-time World Champion Kelly Slater, San Clemente’s Greg Long, Santa Cruz’s Peter Mel and South Africa’s Grant “Twiggy” Baker.

Surfline forecasters will give the surfers two to three days notice before the start of the event.  The official waiting period kicks off on Monday, February 1 and runs until Sunday, February, 28, 2010.  For more info. check out todossantosevent.com.

Volcom Pipeline Pro likely to start today

January 28th, 2010, 7:18 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

volcom

The official waiting period for the Volcom Pipeline Pro began three days ago, but due to the huge unfavorable conditions the event has yet to begin.

The surf over the last few days on the North Shore of Oahu has been solid, with waves exceeding 30 foot faces.

Surfline forecasters are calling for the swell to drop on Thursday to about 10 to 12 feet and for the traditional tradewinds to return which would make for a perfect start at the Volcom Pipeline Pro.

This is the first major event of the 2010 ASP World Qualifying Series.  This 5-star contest offers competitors the chance to earn valuable points towards World Tour Qualification as well as wildcard slots into the famous Pipeline Masters next December.

The Volcom Pipeline Pro holding period runs until Tuesday, February 5, 2010.  If you want to watch the live action from the comfort of your home or while you’re at the office, log onto volcompipelinepro.com.

Huntington Beach Pier Paddle

January 27th, 2010, 7:26 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

hb-longboard-crewIt seems many surfers in the Orange County area who have grown up riding waves along this stretch of coast are really good paddlers.  That’s because the strong currents we often get from the strong south swells in the summer and northwest swells in the winter.

So if you think you’re a great paddler, here’s an event coming up next week.  The 23rd Annual Surf City USA Pier Paddle is an event which will really determine who are the best paddlers.

The contest is put on each year by the Huntington Beach Longboard Crew.  Everyone is welcome, but the Pier Paddle is only open to the first hundred people.  There’s an open division and a handful of divisions for the other age groups.

All participants must use a standard longboard, so this means (no paddleboards or standup paddleboards).  Prizes will be given to those who finish first through sixth place.

The event is free to all HB Longboard Crew members and $5 for those non-members.  Entries will begin on the beach at 9 a.m and the event starts at 10 a.m.  For more info. send an email to info@hblongboardcrew.org.

The 27-year old Santa Barbara local just signed a new deal with one of the biggest brands in the business.

Bobby Martinez has been without a wetsuit and clothing sponsor for more than a year after ending his relationship with Reef in December of 2008.

Besides O’neill, his other sponsors include: Monster energy drink, Swatch Watches, Smith Optics, Ocean and Earth Accessories and DHD Surfboards.

Kelly Slater’s latest shape

January 25th, 2010, 7:32 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

slaters-latest-boardThe start of the 2010 ASP World Championship Tour is still more than a month away, but it looks as though Mr. Kelly Slater has been busy these days coming up with more strange shapes.

The 9-time World Champion’s latest experiment is called The Chunnel.

Slater came up with the name from the words (Channel and Tunnel).  This odd looking stick has the same design as a U-class pontoon racing boat.  Each side on the bottom of the board is veed out with hard concaves toward the rails.

So the big question many might be asking…How will this bizarre shape work?  According to the Channel Islands website, water is compressed over the hole, as it passes over, it draws air into the Chunnel.

Now, I’m not sure if this model is going to be available for custom orders from Channel Islands, but if you’re one of those who likes to experiment, hit them up at info@cisurfboards.com.
