Shane Dorian featured in Visa ad

October 28th, 2009, 12:40 pm by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

 shane-dorian

Well it goes to show the sport of surfing is getting more and more recognition.  Just recently I came across a Visa Black card advertisement with former ASP WCTer Shane Dorian featured in the ad.

It’s nice to know that professional surfers these days are getting the opportunity to make more money besides just the surf company sponsors and contest winnings.

If you don’t remember a couple of years ago, Big Wave Charger Laird Hamilton was featured in a national American Express commercial for several months.  And I’m sure Hamilton took home a pretty good paycheck from that.

Billabong Pro Mundaka wrap-up

October 14th, 2009, 6:17 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

adriano-de-souzaThe eighth stop of the ASP World Championship Tour wrapped up yesterday in Spain.

The 2009 Billabong Pro Mundaka event looked more like a World Qualifying Series contest due to the less than favorable conditions throughout most of eight days.

Adriano de Souzaclaimed his first ASP Dream Tour win in the marginal two to three foot waves at the events backup surf spot, Sopelana.  The 22-year old Brazilian took down Aussie Chris Davidson 16.40 to 11.83.

Unfortunately, Mundaka, the world famous left hand point break never really came to life for the world’s top 45 surfers except on day one of the competition. De Souza now jumps up to number three in the WCT ratings, while Chris Davidson moves up to 20th.

Next stop on the Dream Tour will be the Rip Curl Pro Search in Peniche, Portugal.  The official waiting period runs Monday, October 19th through Wednesday, October 28th.  For all the latest, go to aspworldtour.com.
