North Shore of Oahu wakes up

September 26th, 2009, 8:15 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

pipelineWell if you’re taking a trip to Hawaii this week then listen to this.  The North Shore of Oahu was blessed with an early season winter swell bringing solid ten to fifteen foot surf to the famous seven mile stretch of coastline.

Local and visiting surfers dusted off their big-wave guns for the first time since last winter.  Typically, the North Shore starts to wake up towards the end of October or early November, but this came as a bit of a surprise.

Surfline forecasters say the solid northwest groundswell will slowly fade over the next few days.

On Saturday they’re calling for eight to twelve foot surf with occasional fifteen foot sets and good conditions.  Then on Sunday Surfline says it’ll drop a tad with the North Shore of Oahu seeing six to ten foot waves with some twelve foot sets.

donated

At the beginning of summer Volcom launched a program “Recycle Your Old Boardshorts for a Good Cause”.

Basically they wanted people to donate and drop off their old boardies at any participating surf shop to be donated to a local charity.

Well, a few months later the surf, skate and snow clothing giant just announced it was a huge success collecting 1,091 pairs of boardshorts.

Some of the shops from SoCal included Surfside Sports, Frog House, Huntington Surf and Sport and Laguna Surf and Sport.

The trunks will  be donated to several charities including: Florida Department of Children and Families, Friendship Shelter, Hospital Del Nino, Daniel Kids, Boarding House Mentors, LA Surf Bus, Hidden Waves Foundation, Open Hearts, Surf Nicaragua, Surf Sanctuary and Clothes to Kids.

Next month, two of  Volcom’s featured team riders, Alex Gray and Gavin Beschen will fly down to Nicaragua to donate hundreds of the boardies to less fortunate kids.  This trip will be documented, so check back to the Volcom Web site for updates.

Everyone who donated their boardshorts were entered to win great prizes.  Max Mertens from Jupiter, Fla., was the grand prize winner — he will be given free clothing from Volcom for a year.
