Wednesday surf report: Lumpy and bumpy

April 1st, 2009, 7:27 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Waking up with the waves on Wednesday.  Well there’s a decent dose of action out there, but we’re dealing with a light to moderate south southeast wind.  That’s putting some bump or light chop on it at many breaks.

We’ve got a mix of some southwest swell and a little northwest windswell in the water.  That’s giving us some sorta lumpy and bumpy broken up lines with a few fun ones.  Most OC beaches are running about knee to stomach high with the focal points pulling chest high waves with maybe a plus set.

At 9:26 this morning the tide drops to a 0 foot low which will have some spots pretty drained out and needing water mid morning.  The tide then pushes back up to a 2.9 high at 5:18 this evening.

If you’re gonna grab a session, throw on no more than a 4/3 fullsuit with the water temp at most spots hanging between 57 and 59 degrees.

Good luck out there!!

Tuesday surf report: More fun playful waves

March 31st, 2009, 6:56 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Good Tuesday morning surf addicts.  Well it’s looking pretty fun out there.  It’s nice and glassy with a mix of mostly southwest swell and some minor northwest windswell in the water.

That recipe is offering us some fast sectiony lines with a few little bowl sections at some of the more exposed beach breaks.  Most OC beaches are running about knee to stomach high with the focal points pulling chest high waves with a few shoulder high sets.

At 7:59 this morning the tide drains out to a negative 0.1 low which will have some breaks lacking water early on.  The tide then climbs back up to a 2.8 high at 2:57 this afternoon.

If you’re gonna grab a session, break out no more than a 4/3 full and possibly the booties with the water temp at most spots hanging between 56 and 57 degrees.

Monday surf report: Steady south wind

March 30th, 2009, 6:53 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Good Monday morning surf addicts.  What a bummer!!  We’re dealing with a pretty stiff south wind which is putting some light to moderate chop on it at many spots.

We’ve got a mix of some decent size northwest windswell and some small lingering southwest energy.  That recipe is making for some fairly sectiony lines with a few good corners to grab.

Most OC beaches are running about knee to stomach high with the top spots pulling chest high waves with a few shoulder hig plus sets.

At 6:48 this morning the tide drained out to a negative 0.3 low which has some breaks needing water early on.  The tide then pushes back up to a 3.1 high at 1:13 this afternoon.

If you’re planning on paddling, break out the 4/3 fullsuit and maybe the booties with the water temp hanging between 56 and 57 degrees.

Sunday surf report: Fun combo action

March 29th, 2009, 7:19 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Waking up with the waves on Sunday.  Well it’s looking better than yesterday.  It’s a little bigger with some pretty good shape out there.  So you’ll probably want to hit up a beach break.

It’s mostly clean with a combination of some south southwest swell and some northwest windswell in the water.  That recipe is making for some pretty peaky lines with a few fast corners to grab.

Most OC beaches are running about knee to stomach high with the top combo breaks pulling chest high waves with a few shoulder high sets.

At 5:46 early this morning the tide drained out to a negative 0.3 low which has some spots lacking water still.  The tide then pushes back up to a 3.4 high at 12:00 this afternoon.

If you’re gonna grab a session, throw on the 4/3 fullsuit and maybe the booties with the water temp hanging between 56 and 57 degrees.

Saturday surf report: Small and playful

March 28th, 2009, 6:47 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Good Saturday morning surf addicts.  Well it’s looking fairly small, but some of the better beach breaks are offering a few playful waves.  You might want to break out a fish or even possibly a log depending on where you’re paddling.

It’s mostly clean with a continued mix of minor southwest swell and a little northwest energy.  That recipe is making for some pretty crumbly sectiony lines with a few steep shoulders.

Most OC beaches are running about knee to waist high with the top combo spots pulling stomach high waves with the occasional chest high set.  Expect it to be on the inconsistent side as well.

At 11:08 later this morning the tide climbs up to a 3.9 high and then drops to a one foot low at 4:31 this afternoon.  If you’re planning on paddling, break out the 4/3 full and maybe the booties with the water temp hanging between 55 and 56 degrees.

March 27th, 2009, 6:45 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Waking up with the waves on Friday.  Well it’s looking pretty fun with a small to decent amount of energy out there.  It’s nice and clean with a mix of some south southwest swell and a little residual northwest energy.

That recipe is offering us some workable sectiony lines with some fast corners to pick off.  Most OC beaches are running about knee to waist high with the top combo spots pulling stomach to chest high waves with maybe a plus set.

At 10:30 later this morning the tide climbs up to a 4.5 high and then drops to a 0.7 low at 4:11 this afternoon.  If you’re gonna grab a session, break out the 4/3 full and maybe the booties with the water temp hanging between 54 and 56 degrees.

Thursday surf report: Looking a little messy

March 26th, 2009, 7:16 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Good Thursday morning surf addicts.  Well it’s still stuck in small mode and we’re dealing with a light to moderate south wind which is putting some bump or light chop on it at many spots.

We’ve got a mix of minor south southwest swell and a little northwest energy in the water.  That recipe is making for some crumbly and bumpy sectiony lines with a few fun workable ones.

Most OC beaches are running about knee to waist high with the focal points pulling stomach high waves with maybe an occasional chest high set.

At 9:50 this morning the tide climbs up to a 4.8 high and then drops to a 0.4 low at 3:46 this afternoon.  If you’re planning on paddling, throw on the 4/3 fullsuit and possibly the booties with the water temp still hanging on the chilly side between 54 and 56 degrees.

Wednesday surf report: Fairly small and weak

March 25th, 2009, 7:29 am by Jeff Malanca, contributing writer

Good Wednesday morning surf addicts.  Well it’s looking fairly small and weak out there.  If you don’t care about much size then go get it, otherwise don’t make it a priority to paddle.

It’s mostly clean or light offshore with a mix of some minimal remnant northwest energy and a tad of southwest swell in the water.  That recipe is giving us some crumbly broken up lines with a few fun ones if you’re on a fish or a log.

Most OC beaches are running about knee to waist high with the top spots pulling stomach high waves with maybe an occasional plus set if you’re lucky.

At 9:12 this morning the tide pushes up to a 5 foot high which will have some spots pretty swamped mid morning.  The tide then drops to a 0.1 low at 3:22 this afternoon.

If you’re planning on paddling, break out the 4/3 fullsuit and possibly the booties with the water temp at most spots hanging between 54 and 56 degrees.
