Vintage surf swap meet

old-boardsIf you like to collect old surfboards and surf memorabilia then this is an event you’ll definitely want to check out this weekend. 

The Longboard Collector Club will be having a big surf swap meet in Seal Beach this Saturday where you can buy, sell or trade old surf stuff.

There will be a large display of vintage surfboards, skateboards, bellyboards, posters, surf flicks, books, clothing and anything else surf related.

If you’ve never been to one of these events, it’s really cool to see some of the old retro surf goods that people show up with.

“Coffee Conversations” with PT

Peter ”PT” Townend will be hosting “Coffee Conversations, Talk Story and Bustin’ Down the Door at Huntington Surf and Sport.

The Aussie legend will be discussing surfboards and telling stories about what the surf scene was like back in the day. 

And if you’re in the market for a new stick, PT’s Santa Cruz surfboard model,the Stylemaster retro single fin will be available to check out or buy.

Rob Machado’s, “The Drifter”

rob-machadoThere are a handful of pro surfers who have made a major impact on the sport of surfing, but one that really comes to mind in the last few years is a guy by the name of Rob Machado

This soulful surfer grew up having an amazing amateur career, followed by a great run on the ASP World Championship Tour and is now one of the most famous ambassadors of the sport.

If  you’re a fan of Mr. Machado then you’ll definitely want to watch his new movie, “The Drifter”. 

The movie is filmed in some of Indonesia’s most remote locations where Machado has nothing more than his surfboard, a tent and a journal. 

The Drifter is being shown at several venues over the next few weeks.  This Thursday, November 5th there will be a screening in Los Angeles at The Montalban at 8 p.m.  Then there’s another showing in Laguna Beach on Thursday, November 19th at The South Coast Theatre at 7 p.m.

Professional Longboard Championships

If you want to watch the best men and women surfers in the business walking the nose and hanging ten, then this is an event you won’t want to miss.

The 2009 Professional Longboard Association is holding the PLA Pro Championships in a little more than a week from now. 

The ASP sanctioned  Longboard Qualifying Series contest is the final event of the five stop tour.

Some of the top talent competing from Orange County includes: San Clemente’s Josh Baxter who’s the current points leader in the North America longboard tour ratings andColin McPhillips who’s also from San Clemente.

Some of the notable names taking part in the women’s division include: Cardiff’s Cori Schumacher and Pacific Beach’s Jennifer Smith

The 2009 PLA Championships will also host a division for the best amateur longboarders and a stand up paddle board race.  For more info. check out surfpla.com.

Blackie’s Classics Halloween surf event

halloween-photoIf you surf Blackie’s in Newport Beach then this is an event you won’t want to miss.  The Blackie’s Classics Longboard Association is holding its 6th annual Halloween Costume contest this weekend.

This isn’t a typical surf competition where judges are only looking for the best ride, but also the best costume.  

About three dozen surfers showed up in costumes last year, including one surfer who came dressed as Laker superstar Kobe Bryant.

The event will start about 7 a.m and wrap up about 10 a.m.  So if you can surf and you think you have a really cool costume this year, come down just north of the Newport Beach Pier on Halloween morning.

WSA contest this weekend

wsa-surfIf you happen to be heading down south for a surf this weekend and you’re going to be near Carlsbad, stop by and check out the Western Surfing Association surf contest.

The third stop of the 2009/2010 WSA Surf Series takes place at Ponto in South Carlsbad.  Several amateur surfers from the southland will be competing in the two-day event.

The divisions include:Legends, Senior Men’s, Men’s, Masters, Women’s, Longboard, Micro Grom, Boys and Girls

The surfers hit the water each day at 7 a.m with the event wrapping up about 5 p.m.  For more info. and heat times, check out surfwsa.org.

Rip Curl Wetsuits demo day

NSSA contest heads down south

The National Scholastic Surfing Association NSSA is heading down south this weekend for the fourth stop of the 2009/2010 Southwest Conference Open Season event.

Some of the best 18 and under amateurs from up and down the California coast will be battling it out at the Oceanside Pier

Some of the top talent from Orange County includes: Huntington Beach’s Christian Saenz and Kanoa Igarashi, Costa Mesa’s Colin Moran and Kaleigh Gilchrist from Newport Beach.

The event is made up of several divsions including: Mens, Juniors, Boys, Mini-groms, Women and Longboard.  Meanwhile, Surfline forecasters are calling for a fair to good mix of west northwest swell and southwesterly energy for the coming weekend.  For more info. check out nssa.org.

Jay Thomas fundraiser

jays-road-to-recoveryIf you don’t have any plans this coming Sunday evening and want to help out a fellow surfer then check this out.  There’s a fundraiser for Newport Beach local Jay Thomas who was paralyzed while surfing last March.

A handful of good bands will be jamming at DiPiazza Restaurant and Lava Lounge in Long Beach.  They include: Smogtown, Harbortown Saints, The Junk and special guests Dano and The Juke Joint Freak Show.

Come out and enjoy some good food, good music and help Jay Thomas get back in the water again.  100% of the door money and 20% of all dinner receipts will be donated to the Jay Thomas Special Needs Trust

California’s best college surfers compete

nssaSeveral colleges from up and down the California Coast will be battling it out this weekend to see which university has the best team of surfers.

The first stop of the National Scholastic Surfing Association, 2009/2010 NSSA Southwest College Team Season event takes place in San Diego at the world famous Blacks Beach.

Some of the top universities competing in the first of the four stop tour include:UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, Long Beach State, UC San Diego and San Diego State.  For more info. check out nssa.org.

Luxury surf lessons

Well how about shacking up at a 5-star resort for a night and getting a one on one surf lesson from a pro surfer?

That’s what Billabong and the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel are offering until the end of the year.  The surf clothing giant and premier Southern California resort have teamed up to offer luxury surfing vacation packages.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a child or an adult, a first timer or an experienced surfer who is looking for a few tips from a pro.

All surf lessons include: wetsuits, surfboards, leashes, wax and individual instruction from a Billabong sponsored pro surfer and overnight accomodations at the Ritz-Carlton resort.

Bolsa Chica beach clean up tomorrow

The Surfrider Foundation Seal Beach Chapter is holding a beach clean up tomorrow.

The second Saturday of each month interested volunteers should meet at Bolsa Chica State Beach, Tower 21

If you’re planning on helping out remember to wear some comfortable clothes, closed toe shoes and plenty of sunscreen.

The Surfrider Foundation will provide: gloves, bags, hand sanitizer and the other essentials for cleaning up trash on the beach.  For more info. go to www.sbhbsurfrider.org

Quiksilver wetsuits demo days

wetsuit-demoWinter is fast approaching and unfortunately that means the water temperature will be dropping in the next few weeks.  So if you’re in the market for a fresh fullsuit, then check this out.

Quiksilver is hosting a handful of wetsuit demo days at various surf spots along the Southern California coast in the next couple of weeks.  The entire new line of Quiksilver Cypher wetsuits will be available to try.

Echo Beach Clean Up

 beach-cleanup1If you enjoy the beach and can’t stand seeing trash on the sand, then here’s a chance to lend a hand.  The Quiksilver Foundation and The Surfrider Foundation are teaming up for another beach cleanup.

This time it’s taking place at Newport Beach’s famous Echo Beach.  That’s the stretch of sand between 52nd street and 56th street where surfers Danny Kwock, Jeff Parker, Preston Murray and John Gothard made names for themselves back in the 80’s.

If this happens to be a spot you like to paddle out, come down on Saturday afternoon between 3 p.m and 5 p.m.  A beach clean up will take place on the first Saturday of every month at this same spot.  For more info. check out quiksilverfoundation.org.

Surfscience Teen Conference

tide-pools1If you’re a teenage surfer or a teen who just enjoys the ocean and would like to learn a little more about the world’s biggest body of water, then check this out.

The second annual Surfscience Teen Conference is happening in a little over a week from now in Dana Point.  Several 8th through 12th grade students from the across the southland are expected to attend.

If you’ve always wondered where waves come from or what causes the big tide swings in the ocean, then this is a great opportunity to get a lesson in Ocean 101.

Surfing America Prime Series coming to Churches

The prestigious Surfing America Prime Surf Series is making surfingamericaa stop at Churches in San Onofre this coming weekend. 

What was formerly the PacSun WSA Prime Surf Series is an invite-only competition with the best 18 and under amateur guy and girl surfers from across the country.

This is the second stop of the ten event 2009/2010 schedule.  There are five divisions including: Boys under 18, Boys under 16, Boys under 14, Girls under 18 and Girls under 16.

The Surfing America Prime Surf Series events are run just like an ASPJunior Pro event with 4-man/20 minute heats, ASP judges, computer scoring, live webcasts and high profile media support.

Blessing of the Waves

blessing-of-the-wavesIf you’re a surfer who appreciates the ocean, then here’s an event you might like to attend.  The second annual “Blessing of the Waves” ceremony is happening in Surf City a week from Sunday.

A handful of religious leaders will be on hand to bring together surfers and ocean minded people regardless of their faith and to show spiritual appreciation for the ocean and all that it offers.  

They will also discuss the impact of climate change and pollution in our communities and how it’s impacting the poor throughout the rest of the world.

The event which is hosted by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange seeks to build on the environmental and spiritual messages from last year’s event.

Arnette All-Night Antics party tonight

arnetteIt’s the last night to party with the crew from Arnette Sunglasses.  The fourth and final stop of the Arnette All-Night Antics party is happening at Malarkey’s in Newport Beach tonight.

This last shindigs theme is “Under the Sea Antics”, so come dressed up in your best beach attire.  The last party was “Disco Til Death” and a ton of people showed up in their 70’s disco gear.

10th Annual Cosmic Creek Surf Festival

If you’re a fan of those 1970’s and 80’s retro surfboards then this is an event you’ll definitely want to take part in.  The 10th Annual Cosmic Creek Surf Festival presented by Billabong is happening next weekend. 

This event is open to all levels of surfing with several divisions including the Children or Push-In division which is FREE if mom or dad are surfing in the event. 

The VZ Grems 16 and under, Junior Space Cadets 17-24, Rocket Men 25-34, Honolua Groove Masters 35-44, Rolling Stones 45 and over, Pro and Legends.

Competitors can bring their old 70’s and 80’s single and twin fins, or if you don’t have any of those in your quiver there will be plenty of loaners. 

Each person surfing in the contest will draw a card out of a hat to decide what type of board they’ll ride in their heat.

The two day contest also includes a charity concert and silent auction for the Surfrider Foundation with Donavon Frankenreiter and some surprise celebrity guests jamming on Saturday night, October 3rd.  That takes place at 7 Degrees in Laguna Beach.
