If you don’t mind putting in a bit of work, coupons will be given out for Z Pizza off Main Street in Seal Beach if you join an effort to clean up the Los Cerritos Wetlands on Friday.

The wetlands clean up is being put on by the same crew that holds monthly Seal Beach clean up efforts. Organizers will provide garbage bags, gloves and drinking water.

If you don’t have any plans this weekend and your heading down for a surf session and feel like lending a hand, then check this out. 

The Surfrider Foundation Seal Beach Chapter is holding a beach clean up tomorrow.

The second Saturday of each month interested volunteers should meet at Bolsa Chica State Beach, Tower 21. 

If you’re planning on helping out remember to wear some comfortable clothes, closed toe shoes and plenty of sunscreen.

The Surfrider Foundation will provide: gloves, bags, hand sanitizer and the other essentials for cleaning up trash on the beach.  For more info. go to www.sbhbsurfrider.org.

This time it’s taking place at Newport Beach’s famous Echo Beach.  That’s the stretch of sand between 52nd street and 56th street where surfers Danny Kwock, Jeff Parker, Preston Murray and John Gothard made names for themselves back in the 80’s.

If this happens to be a spot you like to paddle out, come down on Saturday afternoon between 3 p.m and 5 p.m.  A beach clean up will take place on the first Saturday of every month at this same spot.  For more info. check out quiksilverfoundation.org.

Save Our Beach’s “Monthly Beach Cleanup” will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 1st Street beach lot (corner of Ocean & 1st).

They will provide a parking pass and protective gloves. They are expecting a large turnout at this clean up, so if the lot is full head over to get a spot in any residential streets nearby.

Save Our Beach has also started hosting private clean ups for groups of 20 or more, such as businesses or school field trips. They will even meet you in other areas such as Bolsa Chica, Long Beach and Doheny State Beach.

Crowds on the sand ran – cameras in hand – to get a glimpse of the world’s best professional surfer, nine-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Slater is back in Surf City this weekend to compete in the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing, where he surfed years ago when he was still an up-and-coming surfer. The U.S. Open of Surfing was the first venue where he surfed in front of a big crowd.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve surfed Huntington,” he said. “I have a lot of good memories here.”

Slater nailed a score of 9.33 on lackluster waves, winning his heat late in the afternoon. The beach crowds who showed up on the sand got a closer then they may be able to get later this weekend when the crowds swell.

“Oh my God, he’s a legend. Kelly Slater, everyone knows who he is,” she said. He’s super hot. And he’s talented.”

When asked why he decided to come back this year, he said he wanted to support friends Pat O’Connell and Bob Hurley, who he said has always supported him on a personal level. Hurley surfwear is the title sponsor of this year’s event, and has offered competitors a $100,000 purse.

When asked what he’d do with the big prize, he first said he’d put it in the bank. But after thinking about it for a second, he said his lease is up and he needs a new car.

Fan Andrew Wildermuth, 15, made sure to bust out his camera phone, and was nearly too excited to speak after getting so close to his idol.

“”He’s the greatest surfer there’s ever been,” he said. “He’s revolutionized modern surfing.”

Slater said the fan aspect of the U.S. Open of Surfing makes this contest different from where he usually surfs.

“In America, they don’t get to see us surf up close. I think it’s nice for all of us to have the chance to come surf here.”

The beach clean up - which is desperately needed after all the people who come leave all their junk on the sand during the holiday - kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs until about 11 a.m.

Afterward, there will be a celebration from noon until 3 p.m. at Hennessey’s Tavern in Dana Point, featuring Barefoot Wine and bubbly.

The clean up is being held in conjunction with the South OC Surfrider.  Space is limited, and you must be 21 to go to the post-cleanup  party.

Also, if you help with the beach clean up, you’ll get a $5 gift card for Gelato Paradiso. Making the world a better place and getting ice cream. What more could you want?

NSSA contest down at Trestles:

There’s about 800 juniors competing in the contest, and many surfers who have won national titles move on to become world champions. Check out a slideshow of the NSSA contest last week.

Contest for the groms down at Doheny

The 13th annual Menehune Contest, put on by the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association, is open to boys and girls of all ages with divisions for 8 and under on up to 17 years of age. Hundreds of young competitors are expected to participate. Save Our Beach is hosting their monthly beach clean up on Saturday, where hundreds of people usually show up to comb the sand and river jetty for junk.

The clean ups start at 11 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. Meet at the 1st street beach parking lot (where River’s End Cafe is located), corner of 1st Street and Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach. All ages welcome, and it’s a great way to teach your kids about trash that ends up on our coast.

Parking is free, and garbage bags, protective gloves, drinking water, hand sanitizers and school certificates provided. All you need to bring is closed toe shoes and sunscreen.

If you’re not going out of town for the 4th of July holiday weekend, then here’s a cool event where you can hang out at the beach, s0ak up some rays, and help out the environment.

In celebration of Surfrider Foundation’s 25th anniversary, Barefoot Wine, Surfrider Foundation, and community volunteers are teaming up for a nationwide tour to cleanup 25 beaches and lakes.

The event if free and open to the pubic.

When: Saturday, July 5. Beach cleanup from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.

Where: Doheny State Beach, Dana Point.
