Faction Surfboards Grand Opening party

faction-surfboardsIf you’re thinking about picking up a new board, then you might want to check out this event happening on Saturday. 

Faction Surfboards is having a huge Grand Opening party for its new store and surfboard factory.

Faction Surfboards was launched in 2007 by local Huntington Beach shaper Mike Huseman who has been mowing foam for several years.

The big shindig will include: surfboard and product giveaways from several companies including: Future fins, Austin Foam Cores, S.E.R.F Academy, Graphite Masters and many more.  There will also be FREE food catered by Wahoos fish tacos and beverages from Monster Energy Drinks.

Faction Surfboards produces all sorts of equipment including: shortboards, fishes, funboards, longboards and stand-up paddleboards.  The new 2010 line of boards will be on display and if you find one you like you can place your custom order at the event.

ZJ Boarding House/Hurley Store Grand Opening party

hurley-party1While many big surf brands have been affected by the sluggish economy in the last year or so, one major brand is showing no signs of slowing down.

Hurley once again is teaming up with another core surf, skate and snowboard shop.  This time the action sports giant is opening a store inside ZJ Boarding House in Santa Monica.

This weekend there’s a huge Grand Opening party at the new Hurley Store.  There will be live music, drinks, food, and plenty of prizes. 

If you purchase any goods from the store you’ll also get a FREE “Drifter” tee, the new Rob Machado, Taylor Steele movie.

NSSA contest coming to Newport Beach

It’s time for Southern California’s best 18 and under amateur surfers to do their thing.  The 6th stop of the National Scholastic Surfing Association Southwest Conference Open Season event is happening in Newport Beach this weekend.

This NSSA event is single A rated, but will have a special Airshow division which is always exciting to watch.  And sometimes there’s even some cash up for grabs for the surfer who can pull off the most radical aerial.

Some of the other divisions that will be taking to the water this weekend include: Boys, Juniors, Longboard, Mens, Mini-Grom and Womens.

As always there’s a lot of top talent from Orange County that will be competing.  They include: Huntington Beach’s Kanoa Igarashi and Christian Saenz, Capistrano Beach’s Luke Davis, Costa Mesa’s Colin Moran, Newport Beach’s Tyler Gunter and Kaleigh Gilchrist.

The two day competition starts about 7:30 a.m each day and wraps up about 5 p.m.  For more info. and heat times, check out nssa.org.

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau

eddie-aikauThe North Shore of Oahu is about to kick into high gear and that means one of the worlds most prestigious surf contests official waiting period is about to begin.

The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational In Memory of Eddie Aikau takes place at Waimea Bay which is one of the most famous surf spots on the seven mile stretch of coast. 

However, the special event hasn’t happened since December of 2004, when Kauai’s Bruce Irons took the win. 

The contest requires the surf to be at least 25 feet Hawaiian scale which is about 30 to 40 feet on the face of the wave, but mother nature hasn’t produced that amount of swell in the last five years.

Some of this years invitees include: 9-time World Champion Kelly Slater, Andy and Bruce Irons, Sunny Garcia, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Michael Ho, Shane Dorian and San Clemente’s Greg Long.

The 2009/2010 Eddie Aikau event is celebrating the 25th anniversary this winter.  The opening ceremony takes place on Thursday December 3rd.  The official waiting period for the contest runs until February 28, 2010.

Recession buster surf equipment packages

short-packageThe holidays are just around the corner and I know many surfers are hoping that Santa will bring them a new board.  So if you’re in the market for some new equipment and want to save some serious cash, then check this out.

Fury Surf, a surfboard and surf accessories company is offering some screaming deals.  All their surfboard packages come with a surfboard, a travel bag, a leash and a traction pad.  Typically, all that product would cost someone at your local surf shop at least $500 or more.

Newport Beach local scores on camera gig

erica-hosseiniAn Orange County girl pro surfer landed an entertainment gig.  22-year old Erica Hosseini has been a regular competitor on the ASP Women’s World Qualifying Series for a number of years, but can now be seen on camera.

The Newport Beach local recently scored a job on GrindTV.com in association with Yahoo Sports.  Hosseini is the host of the Weekly Grind.  The show features all the latest news and highlights of the week in action sports.

Erica Hosseini can also be seen in various ad campaigns in all the major surf publications.  Hosseini is currently sitting in 34th place in the 2009 Women’s WQS ratings.

Longtime Newport Beach local passed away

garyLongtime Newport Beach local Gary “Shredgar” Edgar lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday.  If you grew up surfing the Newport jetties in the 80’s, then you likely saw this regular foot ripper in the lineup at one time or another.

Edgar was known for his bright colored paint jobs on his boards and fluorescent wetsuits.  He did a lot of competing in his early years and was always backed by some Orange County based surf brand.

Once his surfing career came to an end, he worked in the surf industry for several years.  In the mid to late 90’s Edgar owned and operated Clear Water Glassing in Costa Mesa and Area 51 surfboards and clothing.

If you were a friend of Gary Edgar’s come out and celebrate his life this weekend.  A paddle-out will take place at Orange Street in Newport Beach on Sunday, November 15, at 9 a.m.
