Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson inched a little bit closer to history with a big quarterfinal win over Florida’s Eric Geiselman in the U.S. Open of Surfing. With HB high school cheering squad in place at the shoreline, Simpson charged through another heat, despite a real challenge from Geiselman.
Chris Waring’s U.S. Open dream ended when the Seal Beach surfer lost a tight heat to Ventura’s Nathaniel Curran.
Just minutes before the Nike Pier Pressure event got started Monday morning, Hawaii’s Tyler Newton was at the water’s edge getting ready to paddle out. He and others thought they saw a sand shark until the noticed how the animal was moving.
Newton had spotted a young dolphin that had beached itself.
Several ran over to help the animal and Newton swam the dolphin back out aproximately 30 feet but the animal beached itself again a few minutes later.
He swam it out a second time about 50 feet, but with no luck. Finally, surfers enlisted the help of Huntington lifeguards who located and released the young one to what was described as a frantic pod.
