Andrew McKenzie, who was a part of the Huntington Beach surf team for four years in high school, died over the weekend in an off-road vehicle accident.
According to a story on Surfline.com, McKenzie grew up surfing the Huntington Beach Pier, and could catch any size wave with ease. He helped the surf team get to several All League and State Championships.
“Only the good die young, and he was a good one,” said surf coach Andy Verdone. ”He was very likable, very quiet. A very talented young surfer. He enjoyed the soulful aspect of the sport.”
In a statement sent out on behalf of his family, McKenzie was with his girlfriend Erica Klaer at the time of the accident.
“He was not alone, he was with his soul mate,” it reads. “His passing was sudden and painless. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.”
