Mammoth closes slopes after short opening

October 19th, 2009, 9:00 am · 5 Comments · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

If you were planning on skipping out of work this week to head north for some fresh powder, sorry to tell you, but you’ll have to put your snowboards away.

After a very short opening, hot weather put Mammoth’s near-record opening to rest. After getting enough snow to open after a storm that rolled through, the lifts opened on Friday and stayed open for just a few days before an statement was sent out on Sunday that they’d decided to shut it down again.

Here’s more from the announcement:

“After three days of great skiing and riding here at Mammoth, we’ve made the tough decision to close.  Mother Nature forced our hand – after a big storm earlier this week and great skiing and riding on Friday, record breaking warm temperatures rolled in, wreaking havoc on our snow in the process.

But there’s a small storm on the horizon that may bring some snow and forecasted lower temperatures will hopefully allow us to start making some of the white stuff in the near future. We’re going to evaluate conditions daily …

For those of you who visited to celebrate our early opening: thank you! We’re glad you had a chance to work on your turns, jibs and jumps, long before you had to turn your attention to your Halloween costume.”

You can find out when they’ll open again by following twitter.com/MammothMountain or check out the Web site at MammothMountain.com

Just have to say, I drove up to Mammoth for their opening on Friday, and it was amazing. Sure the snow wasn’t perfect, but I had a great time and look forward to going back soon.

    • Glad to hear, I was wondering how it was on Friday!

We got there at about 4:30am on friday, and it was crazy. Everyone was out in the parking lot drinking and playing loud music. Everyone quickly got their free lift tickets when they opened and got free hot chocolate and pastries. The lines were ridiculously long in the morning, but right after lunch it died down quite a bit. They had 3 lifts open for most of the day (1, 3 and 23 I believe)

The snow on Friday was a little crusty at first, but softened up and was GREAT! They opened up chair 23 and Cornice Bowl, which was a blast. THANK YOU, Mammoth!! We can’t wait to get back up there!

Orange Country skier and snowboarders will be interested to know that the Mt Baldy Chamber of Commerce is giving away FREE special season passes to Mt Baldy.

Mt Baldy is the closest ski resort to OC and most of Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire.

The passes have a few restrictions and a one-time 49.95 activation fee, but that’s it. No more searching for discount ski lift tickets. Ski for free for the season.

This is a limited time offer and may be withdrawn at any time without notice. It is only available at the Mt Baldy Chamber of Commerce web page here:
