May 27th, 2009, 8:23 am · Post a Comment · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

The 2009 OC Surfer of the Year contest - just launched at midnight -  has already gotten competitive.

The contest features 13 shortboarders, 6 longboarders, 6 rising star males, and 6 rising star females - all from Orange County - who are competing for the title of OC Surfer of the Year.

This contest isn’t just about surfing and who can catch the best waves - though that may be your reason for voting - but also about who connects with their community. Maybe one of these contestants surfs at your home break, or sits next to you at your local cafe.

Last year’s winners include Brett Simpson, Greg Long and Courtney Conlogue.

This year, the top surfer from each section will get an award at Jack’s Surfboards during the Walk of Fame at the U.S. Open of Surfing on July 23. The contest runs until July 9.

Each surfer has video, a bio and slideshows. Check the contest out, cast your vote, and send it to your friends: ocregister.com/surfer
