Sea lion shootings in LA area - $5,000 reward for info

February 17th, 2009, 10:14 am · 1 Comment · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

I just saw a heartbreaking story on the LA Times web site about a string of sea lion shootings that have occurred along the coastline.

At least four sea lions have been found with bullet wounds since the beginning of the year, and at least one of them survived.

The latest was a 9-month-old pup found Feb. 3 at Dockweiler Beach in Santa Monica Bay. A $5,000 reward is being offered to any info on the crimes.

Last year, we had a scare in Seal Beach when lifeguards thought something similar happened to two sea lions that washed up to shore. Tests showed that the sea lions had not  been shot, but in talking with the marine mammal investigators, they said it’s a trend that has been happening for years, possibly by angry fishermen out in the waters.

Here’s more from the LA Times article.

Terrible! I wish people could find better ways to occupy their time than to shoot an innocent animal.
