Surfline: Fun combo swell near end of the week

January 6th, 2009, 8:55 am · Post a Comment · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Surfline.com forecaster David Sellin gives us a look at what the waves will look like this week:

Orange County beaches will see a fun combo mix of swell through the end of this week. A large low pressure system that has been covering much of the western North Pacific sends a fun pulse of Northwest swell, and an off-season Southwest swell that developed to the east of New Zealand last week will offer fun, peaky waves along our shores.

On Wednesday and Thursday as a new pulse of Northwest swell builds in our current Southwest swell will be slowly fading. The swell mix will offer 2-3’+ waves for lots of spots while standouts will see some sets getting into the 4’ (shoulder high) range. Similar size surf will continue on Friday, through the weekend as the Northwest swell continues and takes over while the Southwest swell drops out further.

Pleasant weather and mostly sunny skies will prevail as an area of high pressure remains centered over the eastern North Pacific setting up generally light winds with calm to light offshore flow in the morning’s and a light to moderate onshore seabreeze developing each afternoon. The weekend may see Santa Ana conditions with NE flow as that high pressure is forecasted to slide inland over the Great Basin.

Further out, we are currently continuing to track that large storm in the North Pacific that looks promising for more swell in the longer term. Be sure to check out Surfline.com for all the latest updates.
