The 12th annual Christmas tree lighting on the sand is being held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the historic cottages at Crystal Cove State Park.
The day kicks off with a Christmas bazaar, where artists come out to showcase their work. There will also be Christmas carolers and Santa at the tree lighting ceremony.
This year’s tree is about 16-feet tall, a bit of a downgrade because of tight economic times, said Laura Davick, founder of the Crystal Cove Alliance.
Davick said people are encouraged to come down to snap photos in front of the tree.
“With the background of the Pacific Ocean and the sunset, it’s a hard backdrop to match,” she said.
Set in front of the tree will be an antique red Woodie car.
The entire Crystal Cove area – where about 46 historic cottages sit wedged between cliffs – will be adorned with lights and decorations.
Crystal Cove’s historic martini flag will fly again and be saluted at 5p.m.

Crystal Cove State Park constitutes a dramatic 3.2 mile stretch of undeveloped public land along the 42-mile Orange County coastline. Thirteen of the 46 Crystal Cove cottages are now restored as overnight accommodations available to the public. Twenty-five more cottages await funding for restoration for public use.

I can’t wait to check out the “Christmas bizarre.” Sounds mighty strange.
