Surfers and Marines team up for Toys for Tots

The Western Surfing Association and the U.S. Marine Corps have teamed up to bring toys to tots this weekend at the Oceanside Harbor south jetty.

The Toys for Tots campaign will run in conjunction with the WSA Prime surf contest Saturday, followed by the Western Surfing Association Hobie Championship Tour on Sunday.

The goal for the program is to deliver a message of hope to needy kids who might not get any gifts this year.

“We are so blessed as surfers to be able to live near the beach, and have the time, health and resources to allow us to surf,” said Greg Cruse, director of WSA Prime. “This is a great opportunity for us to give back.”

Competitors in both surfing events will bring toys for the cause. They are looking for new, unworn items of surfwear, hats, skateboards, body boards, gift cards.

“It would be great if the surf company sponsors could go through their warehouses and grab any discontinued promotion or return-to-stock items,” said Cruse.

Marines will be on hand both days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Let’s show how generous surfers can be,” said Cruse. “I’d love to see them leave with truckloads of toys.”
