The official start of winter is over a month and a half away, but mother nature has already been producing some monstrous surf from various parts of the world. That means the ninth annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards is off to an amazing start thanks to some super solid swells. The 2009 BillabongXXL.com website already has some of the heaviest video footage and still shots of all time. It looks like South African Big Wave Charger Grant “Twiggy” Baker is a solid contender for the 2008/2009 year with a gigantic wave he rode at Cape Town’s Tafelberg Reef back in August. Entries for the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards must be submitted by March 20, 2009. The Awards ceremony takes place the second week of April. To check out the latest footage, go to BillabongXXL.com
