Dale Velzy contest brings surf lovers together at Doheny

The crew down at Doheny on Saturday held the 19th annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau, where hundreds showed up on the sand to enjoy the day.
The talk of the day was famous surfer and shaper Mickey Munoz, who amazingly entered three heats: surf, standup paddle, and a 4-mile standup paddle race that he did with his wife Peggy.
Munoz, now 71, kept motivated throughout the day to honor his long-time friend, Dale Velzy, who he had surfed with since he was a teenager. The Velzy beach day – now in its 19th year – brings together surfers of all ages to recognize the contribution of the late surfboard shaper, and of course, to have a good time.
“He was a very loyal friend, a great craftsman and designer,” Munoz said. “He had a fabulous sense of humor, and he was eclectic, so he fit right into my program.”

Paddle Surf Warehouse would like to congradualte Mickey Munoz at the Battle of the Paddle yesterday “Oct. 11th 2008″ for doing a great job and placing I think 39th out of 256 paddles.
Mickey Munoz also has his own board for Stand Up Paddle Boarding made by Surftech. Great board for the more advanced paddler.
