Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh got back on the winning track and won a record fifth AVP Manhattan Beach Open today.
Shaking off two bad tournaments in a row after winning the gold in Bejing, the duo beat fourth-seeded Jen Boss and April Ross, 21-18, 21-16 in the most prestigious event in beach volleyball. The win, their fourth in a row here, as always gets your name inscribed on the Manhattan Beach Pier.
“We’re up there with the greats,” said May-Treanor after the match. “I don’t know if there’s another team who can do four in a row.”
The pair also got $100,000 — the biggest paycheck in the sport’s history — for winning the AVP Crops Cup series. But the victories today came through the contenders’ bracket after they lost to Boss and Ross in the quarters, 24-22, 15-21, 15-11. They beat 10th-seeded Lauren Fendrick/Paula Roca, 21-14, 21-14, and third-seeded Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-11, 21-18 to get to the final.
“Were we hungry?” May-Treanor said. “Yeah, we were very hungry for a win here.”
