Top 3 things to do on the coast this weekend

September 19th, 2008, 3:49 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

There’s still plenty of stuff going on along the coast, so here’s some ideas to get you out of the house to enjoy a nice day at the beach.

California Coastal Cleanup Day:

Thousands of volunteers along the coastline will be slapping on the gloves this Saturday and scouring the sand during a statewide beach and trail clean up.

California Coastal Cleanup Day – now in its 24th year -drew more than 60,000 volunteers last year who collected more than 900,000 pounds of trash and recyclables. The day has come a long way since its first year, when 2,500 volunteers showed up to help.

“It’s always hard to predict what the turnout will be, it depends on a whole variety of factors,” said Eben Schwartz, outreach manager for the California Coastal Commission. “We’re hoping to match last year’s results.”

Dale Velzy Classic Surf Contest and Luau:

The 19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau will be held this Saturday at Doheny State Beach.

The day will feature a classic longboard surf contest, a Laua with Polynesian dancers and a live band.

Velzy - who passed away in 2005 was a well-known surfboard shaper and a member of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. The event has been going on for 19 years.

It is open to the public. It starts at 6:30 a.m., with the Luau starting at 3 p.m. For more info, hit up Jack Sutter at seastheday@cox.net. To surf in the contest, contact Mark Calkins at

I had an interview on KDOC Friday morning about the event. Check it out here.

Coastal Sunset Cocktail and Music Cruise:

The weather should be nice enough to jump on a music cruise in the Dana Point Harbor.

Dana Wharf Sportfishing in Dana Point offers our evening live music cruises every Saturday evening, aboard the 95-foot Dana Pride which has upper deck seating as well as inside seating in it’s large galley, making it one of the most comfortable rides on the water. The boat also features a full bar including wine, beer (domestic and imported), and mixed drinks.

This trip will be a harbor cruise although sometimes we may venture outside, going to see the famous Dana Point headlands, weather permitting.
