A beach clean up down in Seal Beach on Saturday drew 682 people down to the San Gabriel River outlet to do their part in making our ocean pristine.

Organizer Kim Masoner of Save Our Beach said everything from cans of sodas, straws and plastic bags were pulled out from the water.

“The kids were on fire, hard working, and digging in the rocks,” she said. “They’d hold up what they’d find and say ‘shoe!’,” Masoner said. “One said, ‘I’m saving the world.’  It was unbelievable.”

One can that was picked up had a few living creatures - small snails - that had found a home. One of the cub scouts suggested the snails get a chance to live, so they were put back into the water.   

Masoner said that about 1,000 bags of trash were picked up by the end of the day. 

A lot of volunteers came from Deloitte Consulting, Tax, Aers, SVCS and UPS to help out. Ruby’s Restaurant came armed with shakes to give out to helpers.

 Deloitte coordinator Michael Staubly said other clean ups in Huntington and Long Beach were held at the same time as the Seal Beach effort.

“This will be the first part of a continued focus on the environment in conjunction with our Firm wide Greening Initiatives,” he said.

If you missed this one, the next big Seal Beach pick up will be on Sept. 20, to coincide with California Coastal Cleanup Day, where there will be a beach pick up at nearly all the beaches along the coastline.
