The USA Championships were wrapped up and the new USA surf team was named at Huntington Beach Pier on Sunday.

Invited young surfers in eight different divisions competed in shoulder- to head-high waves (grom size) and fought it out for national titles.

One of the team’s top surfers, San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino, bounced back from his loss in the Boys Under 16 division earlier in the day to win the Boys Under 14 title.

“I didn’t want to go out like that,” he said “It fired me up. Making the U.S. team is a great privilege.”

Another team leader, Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue got a sweet 16th birthday present with the Girls under 18 title against longtime rival Sage Erickson.

“It was pretty much another NSSA final,” Conlogue said. “But I definitely give an extra bit with her in a heat.”

USA head coach Joey Buran proclaimed this year’s championships better than last year’s saying “The level of surfing went up.”

And because of it, he acknowledged how hard it was for him to pick some of the team members. “I’m a dad, too,” Buran said. “I’ve cried a little myself today.”
