May-Treanor/Walsh win second beach gold medal

August 21st, 2008, 12:19 am · 3 Comments · posted by Shawn Price

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh became the first beach volleyball team to win repeat as Olympic champions when they beat China’s Tian and Wang 21-18, 21-18 in Beijing rain.

It was the 108th consecutive victory for the duo but it was also the first battle May-Treanor and Walsh faced in these games.

Tian had four aces and the 6-foot-3-inch Wang out blocked Walsh 3-2 and had a pair of aces that gave them a 9-8 lead in game two. The last international loss for May-Treanor/Walsh also came at the hands of Tian and Wang.

The title of “best beach volleyball team ever” will now be debated about them after winning the last three world championships, two Olympic gold medals, a 108-match winning streak, and the complete dominance of the both the AVP and international tours.

And it will be a point hard to argue against.

this is the only place I found to comment on the Miami beach volleyball tourney this weekend. In the third game with Misty and

in the 3rd game of the Miami beach tourney with Misty and Kerri leading by 1 point in OT, Misty was attempting to place the ball to the left sideline, when she got blocked. Since it was not a kill from Misty, I thought the girl (Brennan? –not E.Y.) who killed the ball was not allowed to hit the ball twice on a ball that was not driven.
In that case, should Misty and Kerri have won the match to extend their winning streak. Nothing was ever mentioned so I suppose I’m incorrect with that rule. Or was Misty’s ball considered a driven kill?
Sure didn’t look that way on TV.
