Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers completed both their Olympic dream and a U.S. sweep of the beach volleyball gold in Beijing early Friday.
The American duo battled past Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes 23-21, 17-21, 15-4 to follow Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh’s victory in pouring rain on Thursday that made them the first team to repeat as gold medalists in beach volleyball.
Dalhausser/Rogers dug out from a 1-6 start and were down as much as 3-9 in game one before Dalhausser’s roof of Magalhaes finally tied it at 10-10.
Brazil forced a third game after a see-saw struggle in game two, but Dalhausser/Rogers ran to a 9-1 start before pummeling Araujo/Magalhaes for the victory.
Dalhausser had a great day at the net with nine blocks.
