Jake Gibb of Costa Mesa and Sean Rosenthal had their medal hopes dashed Monday after being outdueled by Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos 21-18, 21-16 in the men’s beach volleyball quarterfinals.
But Gibb/Rosenthal had their work cut out for them. Rego/Santos are the defending Olympic gold medalists from Athens and other than six blocks by Santos, the Brazilians did not dominate.
Rego/Santos wil face fellow Brazilian team Arujo/Luiz in the semis.
American duo Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, the world’s top team now seem destined to face Rego and Santos for Gold on Thursday.
