The men’s team of Gibb/Rosenthal battled Japan’s Asahi/Shiratori for a narrow victory on Thursday to wind up pool play for the U.S. teams.
Gibb/Rosenthal edged Asahi/Shiratori 21-15,19-21,18-16 in a nailbiter despite already qualifying for the elimination Round of 16. The American team benefited from some bad serving by the Japanese, while Gibb had five blocks and both teammates served up an ace.

The Men’s Round of 16 begins on Saturday.
