Scenes from the U.S. Open: Motocross on the sand

July 26th, 2008, 12:36 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

One of my favorite things to watch down here at the U.S. Open of Surfing is the freestyle motocross stunts these crazy guys pull off.

First off, it’s so bizarre to see motocross set up at the beach. Second, the tricks these guys do are insane.

I chatted with Matt Leong of Costa Mesa, who rides motocross and couldn’t help but watch.

“It’s incredible to watch the stunts these guys do. These guys have guts,” he said.

With crowds watching in awe, the riders launch off a ramp and pull moves like flips, or grab onto their handlebars and fling their legs up behind them.

Sam Camm,13, was pretty amazed they were able to set up the track on the sand.

“It’s gnarly,” he said.
