San Clemente’s Nathan Yeomans, currently 9th on the WQS and sure to move up, advanced in his morning heat behind Florida’s Gabe Kling then battled his way to the top of a stacked heat against Germany’s Marlon Lipke, Australia’s Julian Wilson and fellow San Clementian Chris Ward. Yeomans beat Lipke 15.16-13.63 , eliminating Wilson and Ward.
In one of a handful heats today where every wave mattered and each ride would shuffle the deck, Yeomans got the lead about two-thirds of the way through. Once he did, he went after a left and launched a hand-free air on the inside section for a 7.13. Unfortunately, despite Ward’s big reverse as time was running out for an 8.13 still wasn’t quite enough to get him through.
“It was pretty tight. I had a 6.37 as a back up so I knew I needed something,” Yeomans said. “I was just looking for something with a nice wall to it.”
Seal Beach’s Chris Waring won again, beating Australia’s Kirk Flintoff and Cory Lopez battled his way through to advance behind Australia’s Chris Davidson.
Saturday action features the women’s final, junior girls final and the men’s round of 24.
