Timmy Reyes put on a show in Men’s Round of 96 heat at today’s Honda U.S. Open of Surfing with the biggest comeback in the contest so far.
The Huntington Beach surfer came from fourth place midway in the heat to solidly beat Hawaii’s Dusty Payne 17.77-13.93. Nailing two solid backhand rides toward the pier first for a 9.17 then shot the pier on the second and scored an 8.6.
“My strategy was to go out on the south end and pick off a few good waves in the beginning, but it kind of failed me toward the half way mark,” Reyes said. “I decided to do the old school Huntington thing and go by the pier. I didn’t know if I should go because i thought they might close out. It was a close one.”
Fellow Huntington Beach surfer Brett Simpson and San Clemente’s Dane Guadauskas won their heats. Shane Beschen was eliminated.
