U.S. Open: Beschen edges Lopez in Round of 144

July 22nd, 2008, 12:33 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Shawn Price

Shane Beschen showed the kids how to win a heat at the Pier Tuedsay at the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing.

Edging friend and former WCT rival Cory Lopez 14.50-14.00 in a midday heat, was a great lesson on finding the peak, getting a solid move on the outside and on the inside to please the judges. He knocked it afterward as “formula,” but also said he was having a really good time.

“It’s peaky. It doen’t get much better for Huntington,” Beschen said. Still a maverick in the surfworld, but now a family man and partner at surfwear maker Tavik in Costa Mesa, there’s not much at stake. “My mindset makes it more fun. It’s not live or death anymore. The waves are fun. It’s overhead and the reform is working.”
